NO CATCHING KZN POLITICIANS: It is reported senior politicians in kwaZulu-Natal have been allowed to get away without paying more than R65 000 in fines and some have even dodged warrants.
DURBAN - Senior politicians in kwaZulu-Natal are not paying their traffic fines, the Mercury reported on Monday.
The Durban-based newspaper reported that more than R79 000 in fines had been incurred by provincial officials but almost R65 000 had been written-off because of non-payment.
Provincial premier Zweli Mkhize, police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni and MEC's have had 11 warrants of arrests made for them but none had been enforced, the paper reported.
WARRANTS CANCELLED
Amazingly, there are still two active warrants of arrest out on Mkhize (is he so hard to find?) after one of his vehicles was caught on camera either speeding or running a red light. A warrant for his arrest issued in 2002 was withdrawn after the two-year period for enforcement lapsed.
The Mercury reported that a warrant of arrest was issued for health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo in 2002 and economic development and tourism MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu in 2003. Three warrants for the arrest of finance MEC Ina Cronje had been cancelled and five for education MEC Senzo Mchunu.
A provincial transport spokesman said the Road Traffic Act stated that if a warrant for a violation was not effected in two years, it was cancelled.
The SA Police Service is responsible for transporting officials in the province.
