DETROIT, Michigan - Chrysler is recalling 30 000 2012-model year Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass 4x4 vehicles to replace a faulty hose in the fuel tank that can cause the engine to stall.
Chrysler SA has been advised that 410 Patriot/Compass units are affected in South Africa.
NEW TUBES, NO COST
A local spokesperson said replacement parts were being dispatched to South Africa and owners of the affected vehicles would be notified in due course of their arrival.
Their vehicles will be fitted with new fuel-tank transfer tubes at no cost.
Chrysler HQ in the US knows of one crash involving a stalled car but no injuries or fires due to the problem have been reported.
The company says the SUV's have saddle-style fuel tanks that curve around the rear drive shaft. Fuel is pumped from one side of the tank to the other through the hose but Chrysler says some hoses were formed correctly and could stop the flow of fuel.
