Cape Town - Weak exchange rate, inflation, rising vehicle prices... August 2016 proved to be a tough period for the South African auto industry.
National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) reports that 46 146 were sold in August, a decline of 9.5% or 4839 units compared to the same period in 2015.
Overall, of the total reported Industry sales of 46 146 vehicles, an estimated 37 345 units or 80.9% represented dealer sales, 15.0% represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3.1% represented industry corporate fleet sales and 0.9% sales to government.

For light commercial vehicles (LCV) the Toyota Hilux remained SA’s best-selling vehicle (3081 units) and well as the local bakkie king, ahead of the Ford Ranger (2237). The Hilux also bested the best-selling passenger car in August - the Volkswagen Polo Vivo (2702).
The Ford Fiesta, the second best-selling passenger car in July (1740), fell to sixth place with only 1069 units sold. The VW Polo, third in July 2016 with 1595 units, moved to second place (2105)
Returning to the top ten list in August is the Ford EcoSport (1033).
