Cape Town - The new passenger market continues to experience pressure during June 2016 and at 29 070 units, reflects a decline of 3850 units or a drop of 11.7% compared to the 32 920 new cars sold in June 2015, reports National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa).
This was despite a strong contribution by the car rental industry which had accounted for 16.8% of new cars sold during the month.
9.7% decline
Domestic sales of industry new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini buses at 13 398 units during June 2016, reflected a decline of 1 433 units or a fall of 9.7% compared to the 14 831 light commercial vehicles sold in June 2015.
Naamsa said: “The underlying trend in new car sales, as well as commercial vehicle sales, continued to reflect progressive and steady weakness and domestic sales were expected to remain under pressure over the short to medium term.
“Subdued levels of economic activity, above inflation new vehicle price increases, low levels of consumer confidence and lower finance approvals would continue to weigh on domestic new vehicle sales during the second half of the year.
Top cars, bakkies in SA
Volkswagen's popular Polos tops the list as the best-selling passenger cars in June 2016 - Polo Vivo with 2354 units and Polo with 1987.
Toyota showed its sales prowess with its next-gen Fortuner (1405), Corolla/Auris/Quest (1300) and Etios (1009) grabbing third, fourth and fifth-place respectively.
South Africa - Toyota's new Hilux remains king of the local bakkies in June (3072 units sold), though the gap to second-placed Ford Ranger (2848) is only 224 units. Nissan's NP200 climbed two places to claim third, with 1076 units sold.
The new Fiat Fullback, launched in June 2016, has already made the top 10 list with 70 Italian bakkies sold.
