World's first M-division dealer

2010-07-30 06:58

The tiny Island of Singapore is a modern economic miracle.

Small, without any natural resources (unlike its oil-rich neighbours) the tiny republic has become perhaps the fiercest of all Asian tiger economies courtesy of a very capable work force adding value to essentially anything they touch.

Simply put, the place is flush with cash.

Due to the truncated road network (it is a very small island) and horrendous traffic Singapore is hardly a petrolhead’s dream location though.

Burdening the prospect of private car ownership even further is absolutely preposterous vehicle taxation - intended to make car ownership as unappealing as possible, consequently lowering traffic congestion.

A new E92, for instance, will set you back $300 000 in Singapore – and you thought performance cars were expensive in South Africa…

Despite geography and government policy conspiring against car enthusiasts there are still some hardcore (and well moneyed) petrolheads who remain in Singapore. To this end the island republic now sports the world’s first stand-alone M-division BMW dealership, which opened for business this week.

The Singapore M-division dealership retails and services BMW’s most engaging performance car products only.

You would have expected the world’s first dedicated M-division dealer to be located in Munich or perhaps one of the large American cities, yet Singapore leads the way.

Considering the financial sacrifice one has to make to own (let alone drive) something like BMW's M3 in Singapore, we think there is some sense of justice in it all.

@ Anon - and i also heard that all these manufacturers have been going on courses to "get to know the CPA act" - enough said.

Yes performance cars are expensive in SA - in fact cars in general are expensive relative to people's affordability in South Africa. That's courtesy of a mafia led MIDP program that benefits only the manufacturer at the expense of the consumer. Did you know that there are two 'german' marques received and used over R15 billion in export subsidies per year!(this was from 2002/2003 so imagine what it is now). Subsidized means tax payers bear the burden, yet we still get overpriced cars brought in under the blatent lie of 'we have to pay import duties'. I'm really looking for the consumer protection act to come into place... the motor manufacturers out there should really be nervous about this...

@LaMont and all other people who refer to the "dolphin shape" BMW 3 series: There is/was no such thing - EVER! Honestly, does the car resemble a dolphin in any way??? "Dolphin" refers to one of the colour options, "Dolphin grey" available at the time.

Referring to the car as an E92 denotes which model it is. You can have an M3 (E46) for instance which is a different model to the E92. You can also get an M5 (E39) which is different to an M5 (E60). It's like Golf 6 vs Golf 5 - still golfs but different models.

The E92, is the body code for the current 3 Series Coupe/Convertible!! like how E30 was the old box shape 3, E36 was the Dolphin shape etc etc.

@LaMont. The author is just trying to sound clever by calling it an E92,in the same way he constantly refers to torque as 'peak rotational force'. Quite sad actually but then we dont expect a whole lot from wannabe South African Clarksons

$300 000- is this USA dollars or Singapore dollars?? and why refer to the car as an E92?- the SA market calls the cars M3/M5/M6 etc
