FRANKFURT, Germany - Volkswagen has overtaken US rival General Motors to become the world's second-biggest automaker after Toyota, 2013 sales figures showed on January 31 2014.
But it was a close-fought race... here's the tally:
Toyota: 9 980 000
VW: 9 730 000
General Motors: 9 710 000
The VW group's sales include products from all 12 of its brands, including truckmakers MAN and Scania.
A VW spokesperson said: "These are the definitive of all our brands. They are comparable with our rivals, which also include heavy trucks."
VW owns the Audi, Seat, Skoda, Porsche, VW, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, VW Commercial Vehicles, Ducati, MAN and Scania brands.
Analysts now believe it possible that the group will achieve its long-term target of annual sales of more than 10-million vehicles ahead of its forecast date of 2018.
