Volkswagen sales slipped in May, but Europe's biggest car maker nonetheless posted a record five-month figure of 1.57 million vehicles, it said Friday.
The VW brand sold 318,600 vehicles worldwide last month, a drop of 0.8% from May 2007, a statement said.
But the number of cars sold since January was up 6.7% compared with the same period a year earlier.
VW said its results, which came in "a difficult market environment," were better than the overall market where sales fall an annualised 2.9% in May.
In China, "although demand was affected by the earthquake" on May 12, the company sold 372 900 vehicles in the five months from January to May, an increase of 18.8%.
German sales rose 9.2% to 218 400 units while in Brazil, 212 300 vehicles were delivered, a gain of 18.7%, VW said.
