US survey: Lexus tops, Mini flops

Lexus was the top brand in the American JD Power and Associates' initial quality study released on Monday.

The annual US survey of vehicle owners, which measures mechanical and design problems in the first 90 days of ownership, found that Porsche was the No. 2 brand, followed by GM's Cadillac, then Hyundai and Honda.

The study indicated that Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have made strides in vehicle quality over the last year, but they still lag behind their foreign competitors.

The initial quality of 2009 model year vehicles sold by the Detroit Three improved by an average of 10 percent from last year, the marketing and consulting company said. Industrywide, scores improved an average of 8 percent.

"The Detroit automakers are keeping their focus on designing and building high-quality vehicles, which is a precondition for long-term success," said David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at JD Power, in a statement.

Toyota, which supplanted General Motors as the world's largest carmaker last year, also swept 10 vehicle segment awards.

Its assembly facility in Higashi-Fuji, Japan, that builds the Lexus SC 430 and the Toyota Corolla took the JD Power's top plant award.

The worst-performing brand was Mini, with owners reporting 165 problems per 100 vehicles.
Though Chrysler's scores improved year over year, it had no brands above the industry average. It tied for one segment award, with its PT Cruiser Wagon sharing the top award in the compact activity vehicle segment with Honda's CR-V. Chrysler, however, is discontinuing the car.

Cadillac and Chevrolet were GM's only two brands with 2009 models performed above average.
The average industry score improved to 108 problems per 100 vehicles, down from 118 in 2008.

BMW's Mini didn't do that well in the latest US JD Power survey.

New models

JD Power credited the improvement to several well-received new models that were launched in 2009. It said vehicles like Hyundai's Genesis, Kia's Borrego, Toyota's Venza and Volkswagen's CC performed better than their segment averages. Several redesigned 2009 models also scored well, JD Power said.

The scores come during a tumultuous time for the auto industry, with sales at their worst level in decades and taxpayers stuck funding the restructuring of GM and Chrysler Group LLC to the tune of billions of dollars.

Although the two carmakers have been pummeled by the economic crisis, many analysts have complained that a shortage of high-quality small car offerings has hobbled their performance in the down market.

GM has several new, small vehicles on the way that industry analysts say should help it better compete with established offerings from Toyota, Honda and other foreign competitors.

It plans to start building the subcompact Chevrolet Cruze next year and start selling the Spark minicar in the US in 2011 too.

The road may be tougher for Chrysler. Cars like the retro 500 made by its new owner, Italy's Fiat Group SpA, won't make it to the US until late next year.

The Auburn Hills, Michigan, company plans to roll out new versions of its popular Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV and Chrysler 300 large sedan by the end of next year, along with a rechargeable electric vehicle, but these plans likely have been delayed by the bankruptcy process.

Reliable figures?

JD Power's rankings were based on questionnaires from 80 900 people who bought or leased new 2009 vehicles between February and May.

The questionnaires ask 228 questions on issues from handling, braking and engine trouble, to seat comfort and stereo systems.

The rankings are closely watched by automakers and consumers, and are frequently used in advertising.

However, some critics question whether they show any real statistical difference between automakers. Mini's ranking, for example, equates to 1.65 problems per vehicle.

Top-performer Lexus had 84 problems per 100 vehicles, or 0.84 per vehicle. So on average, less than one problem per vehicle separates the best brand from the worst.

The problem is, I live in a medium size town with a GM/Opel/Isuzu/Chev (Delta sounded nicer) dealership. I can buy a Cadillac, but who is gonna service and maintain it? This dealership cannot even properly maintain old vehicles that are years on our roads. The buying of cars outside metropolitan areas are determined by dealerships and not the quality of cars. If you live in a town with only a Toyota dealership, the chances are that 80% of the people in that town will drive Toyotas. In this whole district is not one Lexus or Cadillac and the BMW's are minimal, because the nearest BMW dealer is 250km away. This surveys can help people in the cities to make decisions based on quality, but here we must take whatever is available. The choice is between white and brown bread and not all that diet and low GI stuff. We are forced to be that "slavish loyalty based on ignorant perceptions of quality" consumers. The traditional American brands need this report urgently to step up sales volumes. Here in SA we cannot buy cars on American quality, because other people with other quality standards built them.

Lexus sells more cars in a year in America than all the brands put together in South Africa. Does not sound like low volume to me.

Anonymous User 6/24/2009 10:45 AM Your comments don't make any sense. "Record" means the JD Powers study which the article was about, or did you not bother reading it? Posted previously, means posted on other Wheels24 articles/ comments- however, get off your backside and Google JD Powers Dependability study if you want to confirm. Oh, and of course a comment about hamburgers and fries when referencing US cars- wow how novel and intelligent (yes, sarcasm). As for your comment about US car makers' losses, you seem to ignore that they are caused by high in-put costs (pensions, medical plans), not a lack of volume. Last I looked GM was the second biggest car maker and Ford was in the top five. It is a FACT that Cadillac (and Lexus) is a more reliable, better quality car than the Germans with their supposedly "German perfection, German engineering, German Steel, German technology" (boy you sound like a clown)-live with it, even if you cannot stomach it. Your narrow minded comment proves exactly what I was saying- YOU are one of those slavish buyers of German cars who buy without even considering respectable alternatives, which was the whole point of my comment (not that I think people should necessarily buy a Cadillac/Jag or Lexus- it should depend on personal taste- but not misinformation).

Bob - Lexus is the biggest selling luxury brand in the US, so, not such low volume over there as here in SA. And, as a Lexus owner I can attest to the value, quality and good service received from the local guys. It truly is a satisfying ownership experience...

Just a thought: These cars which took place in this US survey, they were obviously built in a factory. Thus, it depends if those models which is also available here in SA, are build in the same factory as the one's tested in the US. If they're from a different factory, one can't just automatically assume you're getting the same type quality car as that from the US. Think about it.

@ Patrick What record, our own? Posted previously, where? We "South Africans" don't buy our cars slavishly! Well at least I don't and no other "South African" I know either. In fact we “South Africans” consider our options before we make a purchase. There are reasons as to why we “South Africans” choose to buy German (kraut-mobiles was it?): German perfection, German engineering, German Steel, German technology. I’m not a Beemer fan. But will rather stick it out with a BMW than any American gas-guzzelin’ cheeseburger and fries. It is clear the American car manufacturers and their products are so good, just look at their financial state... (yes sarcasm)

I was in the USA a couple of years ago, and as I recall at the time, Hyundai were the only manufacturer in the US offering a 100 000 mile / 7 year warranty on the engine and drive train of their products. At the time, no one came close to offering this kind of product warranty. Their efforts are now starting to bear fruit. Interestingly (or un surprisingly) it heads all other Jap and German manufacturers. Well done Hyundai. Also good to see the American brands performing well too.

Lexus - relatively low volume, Porsche, relatively low volume, Hyundai, highest ranked high volume manufacturer, followed closely by Honda. And still people question the quality of Korean Cars... makes you wonder about peoples perceptions these days.

Since Mini is now half Peugot (PSA group) it is no surprise that French engineering is showing its head :-D

Let the record reflect that Cadillac has better initial quality than Merc, Audi, Jaguar and BMW. As does Lexus. And as posted previously, Lexus and Cadillac have better long term reliability than all the German brands. Makes me wonder why South Africans are slavishly buying those genetic looking , less reliable kraut-mobiles. I have nothing against German luxury cars, I still believe BMW builds the best all round car on the planet (3 series) but the slavish loyalty based on ignorant perceptions of quality is nuts. Time for people to give Lexus, Cadillac and Jaguar a chance.
