i agree with the guys that say The new modle toyota's are junk. The new ones are very soft and not rigid as the older ones. i bought a yaris when it was first launched. fancy design and all the comfort you would expect ie: power windows airbags aircon mp3 etc. but when i test drove it it felt like it was going to topple over. but then my wife convinced me its still new so i decided to but it anyways. after driving it for one year i sold the bloody thing. the car feels very light and scary at high speed. especially if i have the family with me. my old 1993 modle corolla although old outshines this by far 378000km and still going strong. toyota does not build them like they used to. and are also cutting down on the bigger motors. what happened to the legendary cressida's with the straight six motors, or the high revving RXI's. they building cars for old people these days. the old engines could handle the beating, these days the motors are revving very high, and alot of squeaks and rattles develop from the car. if i hit my doors with firm pressure on the new yaris you can hear the entire car vibrate, but if i do it to the old one it's solid. Van zyl should also catch a wake up and import some faster modle toyota's like the straight six's. toypta is a reliable brand but they also becoming a brand which gives you a very slow moving vehicle at an expensive price. Not that toyota hasn't the guts to compete in the larger engine arena. BMW has done wonders with their six cylinder motors. why toyota cannot do the same. and toyota was using them before beemer's. Anyways the problem with accelerators, maybe that part of the carpet was made in america. it also could be a conspiracy to stop people from buying japanese and buy american. although i doubt they will win that one. for me i will never buy a new modle toyota, and i'n sure all you guys that have driven the older then the newer ones would totally agree. |
@ Bart: Bart, I am sorry, but one of us got it wrong. I am under the impression that there is one problem only - the carpet and accelerators get stuck and that is what I base my opinion on. I do not know where you get your info from, but that is not what I have read in the news lately. Sounds like if they will have another recall after all. |
@ HP: I agree with you fully; manufacturers shouldn't act only when people start dying due to product failures! Unfortunately that is the downside to mass volume production and what I have found is that with many of the components, manufacturing is outsourced to various unnamed/unknown manufacturers all over the world. One company making a single part, but for various different brands. Just because an item has the Toyota or GM badge on it, doesn't mean they make it, it could also mean that it was manufactured to a specification of that brand. And I think that this is exactly where many of these problems originate from. It's like those Chinese factories making Nestle ingredients and then all of a sudden there are poisonous Nestle products in the supermarkets globally and people start dying, hence the reactive nature of such a company then - sad but true! |

@ Bart: I still feel that Toyota as a whole should have reacted much faster, not after 19 deaths. There are sketchy rumors that there might be a problem with some Toyota models in SA. They lost the plot in the race against GM to be the no1 carmaker in the world and at what price? Now it seems the Prius is having problems as well. Some Toyota’s accelerate with no warning, and now some of them don’t want to stop properly either – Sounds like our SA taxi drivers. |
@ HP & Car-Fan-A-Tic: my point is that the global issue is due to condensation, a problem which hasn't occurred in SA as yet as far as I know. The throttle problem in SA, whether caused by the carpet or a piece of chewing gum, is a different story. The global recall that has now hit our shores is for the condensation problem and that is why I stated it being a proactive approach. |
@Bart, Toyota is Toyota, if it is a Toyota product that is the cause of death then Toyota as a company is responsible. It is this reasoning that people are losing trust in the brand at the moment. Yes, I am sure SA is not so much affected, maybe the dealers use a different carpet supplier, this does not mean that the pedal can not get stuck and cause and accident. The trust in Toyota is dropping... |
@ Bart: I don't get your point. It is clear that many SA customers have the same problems with their Toyotas. So, sorry, pro-active my @rse. Toyota SA kept ducking and diving in SA until now and now they look like fools and that goes for the dealerships too. |
@ HP: Read the article again and you will notice that it pertains to Toyota South Africa, and thus what I had explained in my first post relates to Toyota South Africa, the actual company/branch my dad had worked for. So the studies done by this dude in Massachusetts has no real bearing in this case. If you do proper research you will find, in short, that the accelerator problem is because of a suspected condensation issues only found in colder climates/countries, which automatically excluded South Africa from any initially findings. However, the recall in South Africa is based on a what could possibly be an issue, thus making it proactive. See if your searches on the internet will deliver accidents and deaths caused in South Africa by this problem, the one the global recall is based on, and then we will entertain your argument. |
@ Hilux: You sound just like Malema boet(very stupid). Accept that Toyota can also bugger up. Take it like a man. In general it is still a good brand. Most manufactures had recalls in history. |
@Jon, I cant say for sure that all 19 deaths are 100% related to the pedal fault, but it even seems that Toyota's president Akio Toyoda thinks it is, read the new article about the new Toyota Prius recall on wheels 24. Toyota is a good car company, I guess every dog gets its day. |
Did you know that the Yaris sedan bends at the back when it is carrying a load at the back? I would not recommend putting a towbar on this model! |
I wonder if the authorities will squash my fines if I blame Toyota. "Everything keeps going right, T.....". |
@ HP, did all the 19 dead people tell the research company that that happened? how many of the 2000+ were carpet faults by the driver? I have had this several times in my Corolla and everytime it is MY fault, carpet... not the car. this is ridiculous. |
Miskien is jou stelling nie so geloof waardig as wat jy wil he ons moet dink nie!!! |
come what may----it will always be a toyota for me thousand others |
I had my Beemer pick up revs on is own accord on a number of occasions and also found that the mats were slipping forward. all because BMW stopped installing the mat retainers which screwed into the flooring. This new velcro is crap, period.
|
I had the same problem on a RunX 1.4, took it in counteless times and eventually traded it in due to the danger. Put me off Toyota for life. Service people couldnt care less at the time and also gave me the "your fault you bought a massed produced car" line which really pissed me off. |
It's all a storm in an American coffee mug. Americans are born with liability issues and some clown even successfully sued McDonalds (or whoever) for failing to display a warning on their styrofoam cups indicating that the coffee is hot (duhh!!). All cars are prone to carpet/pedal issues if loose protective mats are placed on top of fitted standard carpets. Don't blame others for your own stupidity and negligence. |
Yes, that famous slogan has been comprimised by greed and the need for Toyota to be the #1 vehicle seller in the world. Unfortunatley, the dropped the quality ball in getting there, and it is going to cost them dearly on all fronts.
Hopefully they will become more humbled by this experience and less arrogant in their view of the "others" and customers alike.
Maybe, just maybe, they will also consider dropping their vehicle prices, as Toyota's are no longer superior in terms of quality, reliability and all the other attributes that we look for in a vehicle. Ford/Mazda, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai & Kia to name a few are right up there and more keenly priced.
To Toyota, bend down & take it like a "man", say sorry to your customers for screwing them, & bring back the old quality & lower prices. |
BBC ran this story a few days ago, reading through the comments seems like ever vehicle manufacturer under the sun suffers from the same problem at some stage.
I commend Toyota for coming forward and admitting the fault. Toyota is the top selling car in the world and this kind of service and loyalty explains why. |
I have been having problems with my 2008 corolla accelorator pedal as well. |
Same accelerator problem on Yaris sedan. |
And they make fun of Land Rover...LOL!!!!!!!!! ;-)))))))))))) Karma... |
Every large vehicle manufacturer has issued recalls at some time or another. With amount of parts in an motor vehicle I'm actually suprised it is not happening more often. |
And the political airheads were calling for ministers to emulate Zille and Pravin Gordhan by buying Lexus and Prius, gee! What if the thingy got stuck at 120 kms while approaching a railway crossing? Populism does not pay, safety first. People should not endanger the lives of our leaders irrespective of which party they belong to. I advise the two leaders to change their official cars as soon as yesterday. I vote ANC but I would never wish Zille no harm, we need her to keep our democracy alive. What about a Range Rover Sport Madamme Premier? |
Mine is too sharp, faultless machine |
Reading the many serious complaints about Toyota products posted since the palava started makes me wonder: how did Toyota managed to cover it up ALL the time? Was it to gain market share through statistics published by the now also UNRELIABLE market researchers? How will we ever believe future results especially in the motor industry when tainted like horse races? |

Toyota is n klomp k..k.net een voertuig en dis n nissan |
The problem is that Toyota relied on an American company to manufacture these parts!! Should have just stuck to Japan and China! |

your loyalty is touching but this problem goes back to 2007 and toyota have been denying it till now. now that there have been 9 deaths in the states directly linked to this fault! |
Recalling cars only after people died seems pretty reactive to me. |
Can someone PLEASE explain to me how doing a recall after a few deaths and hundreds of thousands of complaint letters is being Pro Active? Toyota never had the guts to admit anything, they were backed into a corner, and to date their Chairman has still not formerly admitted the problem. |
My dad worked for Toyota for 21 years. When Toyota executes a recall it is because of the possibility of a problem in a very proactive manner, and not reactive as with many other manufacturers, and that is why Toyota is regarded as reliable. Usually these recalls start after one or two spotted parts at a service gets replaced. These "defective" items are then shipped to their metallurgic engineers for studying, and if found to be a large scale posing problem, a recall campaign is launched - that is why everything keeps going right, right there! |
At least Toyota has the guts to admit to their failures and do something about it. Unlike the cetain american manufacturere (mentioned above) |
LOL |
toyota are breaking records. record sales and now it will be a record recall and record losses. and record pig headedness from toyota.record boring cars, record amount of managers sticking heads in grounds ostrich style, record amount of people leaving toyota to buy other brands.
this is only toyotas fault and no one elses.
you can fool all the people some of the time, some of the people all the time but you can fool all the people all of the time.so Toyota think
|
Heard that Audi will be issuing a recall on all of their new range as the fairy headlights can't be switched off during the day??!!?? |
What about the Yaris? Had a couple of incidents myself while driving the car. |
When vw recalled the polo tdi (including mine) all the toyota fans laughed and the snotty comments i received....nou wat nou....looks like toyota made a mistake....oops!! Don't get me wrong, i am not dissin Toyota, but the point i am trying to make, with mass production their will always be faulty parts. Rather be happy that they replace than to keep quiet. so think twice before mocking another brand, as yours might be next :) |
I have seen this accelerator problem on this wheels24 website a few times in the past. My dealership is aware of the problem other drivers have had as well with corolla's. Mr KOK IS LYING if he says the company has not being experiencing the problem Locally. look at past wheels 24 posts as well. |
It's about time they include SA. I have been complaining to the SA dealership for sometime that the car sometimes shoots straight to 6500 rpm for no reason. They said it is a loose floormat, but all my past cars floormats were also loose and I never had such a problem. If you don't think quickly and switch the engine off, it is a frightening experience going from 2500 rpm to 6500 rpm in half a second. the experience is almost like going into neutral or dropping 2 gears when already doing high revs. |
Rumour has it that Toyota is gearing up for a brand revision and name change; their new name is to be "Ford Motor Company of Japan" |
It's called mass production...and all the other OEM have caught up so Toyota is being pushed over their limits to supply the most cars to be market leaders which in turn pushes out quality issues like this. Remember that the BIG plants can push out over 3000 units A DAY easily...that is just ONE plant. So imagine a fault like this happening...be TENS of THOUSANDS of units before anyone notices. Sorry but Toyota is no longer the Toyota we knew...and it's not their fault, it's economics....MAKE MONEY...MORE MONEY... |
DIE HOOGSTE BOME VANG DIE MEESTE WIND. DIE PROBLEEM HET NIKS UIT TE WAAI MET !!RELIABLE!1 NIE. SLEGS EEN NOODLOTTIGE ONGELUK TUSSEN MILJOENE EN NIE EEN IN SUID AFRIKA NIE . KOM NOU TOYOTA HATERS JULLE SUUR DRUIWE GIS NOU BEHOORLIK!! DANKIE TOYOTA VIR EERLIKHEID EN HOU AAN OM NOG BILJOENE BETROUBARE MOTORS TE BOU. |
The question is how much this will cost the owner. I am a toyota owner only because it is by far the cheapest car to run for 300,000km. So if that stays the same I will keep on buying them (second hand coz prices today do not make sense also). |
Ag come on. |
It seems that Toyota is no longer as reliable as it used to be. "Alles loop reg, altyd reg" no longer applies. I also think that most of the Toyota products had systematically gotten very ugly over the past few years, can Toyaota not do something about that? |
"Everything keeps going right" come guys lets sing along "Everything keeps going right,,,,Toyota" |
