Toyota expands recall

2010-02-02 14:16

Toyota Motor said Tuesday it would expand to the Middle East, Africa and Latin America its global recall over an accelerator pedal problem.

Toyota will recall about 180 000 vehicles imported from the United States and sold in those regions, Toyota spokeswoman Ririko Takeuchi said.
The company is still considering whether it will be a voluntary or compulsory recall in those regions, she added.

Toyota said that condensation - which contributes to the pedal problem - was less likely to build up in hot climates than in the United States and Europe.

The group has identified 40 000 Avalon 2005-2010 and Sequoia 2009-2010 vehicles in the Middle East with the problem pedal.

In addition, 80 000 vehicles in Africa and 60 000 in Latin America are affected, the company said, without specifying which models.

The automaker pulled up to 1.8m vehicles in Europe Friday, the latest in a series of Toyota recalls that have affected almost eight million cars worldwide - roughly equivalent to the group's entire 2009 global sales.

Along with the sticking pedals, the group is recalling almost 5.3 million US vehicles to replace floor mats that could trap accelerator pedals.

For the record the accelerator in my yaris has gotten stuck twice in the 3 years that I've had my car. I just hope that Toyota does the right thing and fixes the problem in South Africa as well.

Just for the record. Honda did not deny anything. That was the Honda fans on this forum. Honda from the beginning said that they would investigate the fault, and now they doing the recall. Good on you Honda. Opel, well the less said the better. Opel actually went as far as to blame the drivers for there exploding window fault.

First the Fortuner suspension fault denials and now the accelerator denials. Deny Deny Deny doesn't quite have the same ring as "everything keeps going right", does it? TOYOTA: The One You Ought To Avoid.

Not only Toyota denies faults and then has a recall. Opel corsa lite back window, Honda Jazz electrics, Toyota Fortuner suspension etc. motor manufactures only fix a problem they are aware off once there is enough pressure. First action is always denial. Manufacturers look at statistics not service.

Come on Toyota. First they deny that there is a problem at all. Then they admit to a problem with US cars only. Then they deny that there are similar problems in Europe, then do a recall there to. Once again they reassure all that it will only effect UK and a few other European countries, and against customer complaints, deny problems anywhere else. And now! further recalls.
