Recall: Toyota SA responds

2010-02-05 14:58

Wheels24 interviews Leo Kok, Toyota SA's Manager for Corporate Public Relations, regarding the recall of Toyota vehicles in SA.

Wheels24: What model year and derivative: Corolla, Verso and Auris vehicles sold in South Africa are affected by the recall?

Leo Kok: That is still under investigation and will be announced as soon as possible. We have not excluded any other model range until we have finalised the complete technical study.

Wheels24: Will affected owners be contacted directly by Toyota SA?

LK: Yes, we will contact owners and dealers will assist in this.

Wheels24: Who could affected owners contact if their vehicle falls in either of these categories? (ie. is their a dedicated help line?)

LK: They are more than welcome to contact the Customer Contact Centre (0800-139-111)

Wheels24: What other Toyota model ranges and derivatives sold in South Africa will be affected by the recall?

LK: We are still busy with the investigation to make sure that we look at the accelerator-pedal mechanism on all the vehicles we sell in South Africa. The only three vehicles that have been isolated so far are the Corolla, new generation Verso and Auris.

Wheels24: What is the required repair and how long can affected owners expect this repair to take?

LK: We will fit a small metal part to the accelerator pedal assembly that can be done while the owner waits. More detail will follow next week.

Wheels24: Will they be given alternate transportation while their vehicles are being repaired?

LK: We will be able to provide detail on the overall logistics when we announce the final recall next week.

Wheels24: Will owners be charged for the repair/s?

LK: Absolutely not. It will be a cost for Toyota, regardless if the vehicle is a used vehicle, outside of its warranty or out of its service plan.

Wheels24: What systems are being implemented to prevent a similar situation in the future?

LK: We have always maintained the strictest level of quality control and in South Africa this is a pre-emptive measure to prevent this problem from rearing its head. More information on extra steps will become available once we have finalised the study on the overall recall.

Wheels24: Will owners and business owners be compensated for the loss of use of their vehicles?

LK: We will be able to provide more information on this once we have finalised the details of the recall.

Wheels24: Does Toyota SA feel the recall will have any negative affect to the residual values of vehicles sold within this period?

LK: The process in South Africa is a pro-active step to prevent this problem from rearing its head. I believe that Toyota owners will still experience the high residual value that they have come to expect from their Toyota vehicles.

I have been having break squeaks before my second service-this was cleaned out etc.At my third service @44500km i was told all for of my disc and disc pads need replacingat mt cost +-R8500.00.Toyota SA will not honour my claim and advise i should forward to ombudsman. Is peace of mind still part of the deal??---something definitely foul about this issue

I drive the 2008 D4-D with over 56000 km on the clock. I must say I never had issues with the accelarator nor has my wife who also drives the car. What I am concerned about is the rate at which the brake discs wear. If you own the new model Corolla, you are looking at replacing brake discs at km as low as 30000 and to have replaced the front and rear discs and bads by 60000. All this will set you back a cool R8000.00. I think there is an issue here too and Toyota will never admit it until their hand is forced.

I drive a Toyota Avanza. The rear seat does not latch to the catch because of the floor mat. I only realized the problem when i panic braked. My two children were flunged over the seat in front.I phoned Toyota SA told them what had happened. They said they were unaware off the problem.I decided to investigate on other AVANZA cars which had the similar problems. All cars had similar problems. The chassis numbers matched to my car.I phoned Toyota SA and told what i have investigated.I Told them to please recall all cars in this model. For peoples safety.I did not want anybody to exprience what i had went through.THEY REFUSED to do the recall.Toyota must replace the rear floor mats on all Avanzas

When will the owners be notified regarding the recall on the Corrola for the accelerator problem? how long do we have to face the danger on the road regarding this? some of us got only one vehicle and need to use it for everyday use!

When I entered my VIN number and details of my 2008 Toyota Corolla on the Toyota website, I was informed that my vehicle was not affected. Is this what they telling all their clients. How do they determine whose vehicles are affected without examining the vehicle. Are they really recalling any vehicles for repair

New slogan: Toyota - Moving forward, even if you don't want to. I've actualy had this problem with my 2007 Yaris. I was on the highway once when my car just started accelerating. I can tell you it was extremely scary. I've emailed Toyota as well as tried to contact them through their contact page on their website but nobody has come back to me.

Toyota, as a brand, are known for their quality and reliability. But that's it. Apart from those qualities, Toyotas have pretty much nothing else going for them. They're boring to drive, ordinary to look at and have no character whatsoever. So, best Toyota sort out this glitch because without their "reliability" reputation, there's no other reason to buy one.

How come the Yaris is being recalled in the UK but not here? Public relations disaster for Toyota. You'd think that Toyota SA would have made more of an effort to at least get all the correct information. The fact that they haven't either shows gross incompetence or gross neglect. Or probably both.

Oh people get over yourselfs... Its the accelerator that is faulty not the gearbox, and clutch and what ever other problem you may have with your car. You wont get a freebie fix for those faults. Also be glad Toyota was willing to admit to this and do a recall. This is at thier expence and they are willing to admit its their fault, which I think is more than what can be said about a lot of you here. Take your car i, get it sorted, and keep driving your Toyota if you like the car. Stop moaining.

Mr Leo Kok does not say much except "More information on extra steps will become available once we have finalised the study on the overall recall." Nice touch. Amazing how these Toyota people handle things. Completely over confident like the Hilux drivers. The roads belong to them.

As a person that owned 6 toyota's in the past I will really think hard to buy this brand in future. Diesel injector problems on the D4D...then they say it is bad fuel....but so many other brands run without problems. Fortuner stability problems... TSA also playing games with that....

Had a problem with mmt gearbox and for years toyota refused to acknowledge a problem existed. Also have a new corolla and I must say never again. I went through hell to get my car fixed and that was under warranty. NEVER AGAIN. try something else instaed.

We had the problem with the accelator that gets stuck and then races the engine uncontrollably several times on our 2007 1600 Corolla. When taking this up with the Barloworld Bellville agents several times, we were regardes as either incompetent or somewhat troubled. I went back to them last week and no recall yet. In the mean time it is hugely irritating when Mr. Kok consistently publicly denies that SA Toyota has had any reports of the problem. Corporate obfuscation.

I have been having a problem with my TOYOTA 160GLE gear changing and this is not normal with any car for gears to lock up whilst the car is in motion. This is dangerous as the car behind you is still in motion, especially when you are dring uphill and your car stalls. i service my car regularty at a TOYOTA outlet, and funny they have not picked up this problem, which i experience only during driving. Please assist as this is dangerous and i suspect this could be a factory defect, as i have driven other models and competitor cars and never encountered this problem. tx

a minor flaw in an otherwise extremely reliable brand, lets just hope toyota sort this out quickly and with no major hiccups. what they do now will determine how they will be perceived in dealing with issues in the future.

ALLES LOOP ALTYD REG......TOYOTA. A small hiccup like this happens in the best of families.Toyota stays one of the most reliable vehicles around .I owned a Toyota dealership for 27 years before I retired and I can honestly say they DO LEAD THE WAY. Toyota should now also come clean on the known handling problems on the Fortuner... The VSC on the Diesel model will only hide the affects in instances of small instability... and what about the injector issues on the D4D engine....

I drive a Toyota Auris 2.0RX D4-D and I'm very concerned. I called Durban South Toyota where I bought the car. They just dismissed me by saying it only affects overseas cars, but I'm no stupid, i believe the Auris is an overseas car.
