RMI welcomes govt decision

South Africa’s Retail Motor Industry (RMI) has welcomed Government’s decision to delay implementation of the Consumer Protection Act to March 31, 2011.

Jeff Osborne, CEO of the RMI, says the decision will allow companies more time to prepare, especially with regard to training of employees.

“I’m pleased that Government has listened to the voice of business,” Osborne says. “Over the past months the RMI has been foremost among a number of business organisations that have lobbied for the Act’s deferment. This will allow business more time to fine tune the sector codes upon which the Act and its regulations will apply.

“Delaying implementation of the Act by five months will allow business more time to properly prepare for its introduction.”

Osborne says it is clear from the way the Act was drafted that it was the intention of the legislature that the full set of regulations would have been finalised to coincide with the general effective date, originally October 24.

“In view of the challenges Government had in meeting deadlines, the RMI was foremost among a number of business organisations that lobbied for a postponement of the general effective date. I am pleased that the voice of business has been heard.”
