Cape Town - 240 000 Peugeot 307s are being recalled across Europe and possible problems related to the cars ABS and ESP systems are being cited.
While it was not clear what countries are affected, the fault could lead to a short circuit within these safety systems.
Peugeot SA has confirmed that while it is aware of the recall campaign, the exact nature of the fault, and whether it affects South African-bound units, has not yet been communicated by its France headquarters.
However, local customers will be informed should their vehicles be affected.
In Europe, the 307 has been plagued by recalls. 60 000 units were recalled in 2005 after nine cars burst into flames.
Last year, 10 500 Danish cars were recalled for a possible fault in the stability stability programme.
