Noble is back with SA-built Fenix

2009-11-20 10:55

Lee Noble, considered impersonable and pedantic by some. You’d probably be too, if you built three of greatest sportscars ever from scratch. After being fired from his own company, he’s simply started another.

After being banished from the company bearing his name, Lee Noble has started Fenix Automotive with the aim of launching another supercar killer by next year.

Probably the greatest independent performance car designer of modern times, Noble’s abilities need little verification.

    An unheralded talent?

The maverick engineer might be as renowned for his abrasive personality as for the genius he visits upon mid-engined car design, yet his body of work is peerless.

First there was the Ultima GTR, which was - excuse the pun - ultimately an endurance racer with indicators.

The Ascari Ecosse followed, which underlined Noble's evolution to a more road-biased supercar design.

Those first generation Ford Mondeo rear lights were a bit weird, but this is the view most 911 owners get of the M12, generally pulling away...

Lee’s first cars bearing his name, the Noble M12 and M400, were epic - capable of besting supercars retailing at nearly twice their price.

The latest Noble M600 doesn’t carry Lee’s signature though. He was fired from the company in what many called a palace revolt at Barwell last year.

A curious case of fraudulent property ownership dealing was given as the reason for Lee’s departure.

Rising from the ashes, like a Fenix?

You can’t keep a determined designer, who’s made a career of beating the system and playing against the odds, down.

This week Lee Noble officially made clear his intentions to release a mid-engined V8 supercar, very much in the pure sportscar tradition of his previous work, to market by the end of next year.

Never one to shy away from predictions, Noble has said the car will retail for just under £75 000, boast 0-160km/h accelerative verve in the region of seven seconds and, allegedly, boast Noble M12/400 humbling dynamics.

Considering how good the M12 and M400 were, those are fighting words indeed…

Noble tubular chassis and V8 power cocktail should mix up to something really special with the forthcoming Fenix...

Nearly there, with a little help from his friends

Development of the yet unnamed Fenix car is a year in the making, with chassis and powertrain verification currently being assessed within the first prototype.

A neat local angle is the involvement of long-time Lee Noble partner Hi-Tech Automotive of Port Elizabeth. Hi-Tech built the prototype Fenix and should be responsible for production versions too.

Noble’s mantra of high-quality, low-cost manufacturing (no matter where in the world it’s made) has always been one of the best marketing glances on the ingenuity of the South African automotive industry…

Bloodline, I agree completely. You can not compare a Porsche with a Noble...the Noble is the far superior driving machine. It's not just about the powerplant. The chassis and suspension design are what truly separates the Noble from the rest. Porsches are undoubtedly fantastic cars, but for the enthusiast that demands the most tactile and visceral driving experience the Noble is in another league.

zezinho : Im sorry but a car of such a propriety purpose fills a gap that doesnt exist. Slapping two turbos to a v6 enshrouded by fiberglass is not design / engineering genius, if it were, a whole bunch of danville specials running at Tarlton Drag Strip every Sunday are in deserve of your praise. I maintain that you cannot compare any product made by Noble to a Porsche.

Not certain who Bloodline is, and not intending to pick a fight, but really until you've driven a Noble M400 back-to-back with a Porsche (take your pick, all the way up to a Carrera GT), the "no passion" comment is misplaced. The Noble is FAR more passionate than the Porsche, more tactile, more exciting, more "rush", more everything where DRIVING is the subject. That said, you are right about the refinement, the Porsche is indeed more refined in terms of decor and fit and finish. But even the ride itself is below the Noble amongst the cars that can try to run with the Noble (the GT3 and the GT2). Don't even think of a Turbo trying to run with a Noble, it's so far slower you wouldn't believe it... A suggestion for you: I know how hard it is to actually get a drive in a Noble. But do this: go drive a Turbo, then a GT3RS at your local Porsche dealer. You'll feel quite a difference...my guess is, you'll consider the GT3RS to be the higher on the "passion" quotient, and the Turbo to be higher on the "refinement" quotient. The Noble is yet another notch beyond the GT3RS on the "passion" quotient. Is not a car for everyone, admittedly, but in terms of pure passion, no question about the Noble, really. My two cents worth, for what it's worth, having driven all of the cars above on road and track. Again, not trying to pick a fight but...drive them first, then decide/critique. Thx!

@and your point is ???, The same point someone born in Durban would say Gordon Murray is from Durban, Mr BMWI6 is giving props to his homeboy.

TVR, Noble, Ginetta etc All kit cars with no passion. You can never compare them to the refinement of a 911. At least owners of Subaru Impreza's and Mitshubishi Lancers have something to aspire to.

Lee loves building supercars so much I don't think he'll ever go for mass production. I hope Fenix will stand up there with the best, like the Noble

The new owners of Noble are smoking their socks trying to sell the M600 at GBP200k. Well done to Lee Noble for bringing back a super car at the same price as a Porsche Carrera. Looking forward to the first reviews

Hmm from Limpopo, must be why he has such an endearing personality :) He builds incredibly good cars and his experience is priceless. Just hope he has the right kind of people around him and an understudy would be great

Well done, Lee!!! I love my expensive and exotic supercars, but the Noble blew the Aristocracy clear out of the water with the M12 and later the M400. I really cant wait to see what Lee will give us next!!

Why not start a mass production car company too? SA needs to be able to produce cars like the rest of the world.
