Japan's top business daily is reporting that Nissan plans to invest in Russia's largest automaker, AvtoVAZ, which is already part-owned by Nissan's alliance partner Renault.
Nissan buys into Russian carmaker
The Nikkei said on Tuesday that Nissan hoped to strengthen its foothold in the Russian market with the investment.
Renault already owns 25 percent of AvtoVAZ. With Nissan, the two automakers hope to take a controlling stake in the Russian company, the report said.
Nissan was not available for comment because of a French national holiday.
The Russian auto market has strong potential for growth after plunging amid the global financial crisis, according to the report.
