Joule creator named SA 'visionary'

Joule, created by Optimal Energy, is considered to be South Africa's first battery car.

The man credited with creating South Africa's first battery car has won an award for "being a visionary".

Kobus Meiring, CEO of Optimal Energy which produced the Joule, won the category in the Men’s Health 'Best Men 2010' with the accolade: "He has demonstrated tremendous vision, courage and leadership in an undertaking that many have described as foolish."

The magazine's editor added: "Best Men is a recognition of the finest men in South African society, men we are honouring because of their achievements and contribution to society. Role models still exist in our country."

Meiring praised his staff, adding: "Without the support from our government (see below) and the 115 people who work for Optimal Energy my dream would never have become a reality.”

The state has so far ploughed R200-million into the car's development, with another R5.7-billion apparently needed to take it to market. The production date has varied, with 2013 now becoming 2014. Not one car has yet been sold and the price, according to Meiring, will be around R2360 000 - not counting the battery, which will be leased for another R1500 a month.

Visionary indeed.

The selection of finalists followed a public call for nominations.
