Industrial drama hits car sales

Naamsa has announced that new vehicle sales figures in September 2012 reflected a slowdown in the growth seen in the first eight months of the year with the current level of industrial action being named as a cause for the dip in business confidence.

Naamsa did say, however, that sales in September 2011 reflected a particularly strong month.

CUSTOMERS PUT OFF

The recent spike in industrial action was, however, seen to have affected business confidence and similarly consumers were seen to have deferred their car-buying decisions.

Domestic sales, excluding results from Mercedes-Benz SA, improved by 740 (1.4%) to 55 097 from 54 357 in September, 2011. Total domestic sales for the first nine months remained 10% ahead of the corresponding period in 2011.

Export sales also increased marginally by 703 (2.7%) to 26 638 although this was expected to increase as various export programmes develop.

Exports of light commercials are expected to increase substantially in 2013, though exports to Europe would remain under pressure.

MODEST GROWTH

New car sales maintained modest growth over September 2011, increasing 1667 (4.4%) to 39 496. Year-to-date sales remained 11.5% ahead.

Sales of new light commercials and minibuses reflected a decrease of 725 (5.2%) to 13 279 during September 2012 – a figure, Naamsa said, that reflected a possible fall in general business confidence.

Overall, of the total reported sales for September, 2012, 78.4% were dealer sales, 13.9% sales to the rental industry, 3.4% corporate fleet sales and 4.3% to government.

Naamsa, however, saw a number of factors that could continue to contribute towards increased domestic sales, including low interest rates and an ongoing improvement in vehicle affordability. The industry remained on track for 10% growth during 2012.
