Hyundai achieved its highest ranking in the JD Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study in the United States with three of its cars in the the top three of their respective segments.
The Korean automaker's ranking jumped from 28th in 2010’s survey to 15th in 2011's. The Hyundai Equus emerged as the highest ranked vehicle in the large premium car segment and the Sonata was second in the mid-size car segment.
The Equus also achieved the highest score of any model in the industry in 2011 and it is the first year that a model other than the BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS or Mercedes-Benz S-Class has led the overall model ranking.
IX35 THIRD
The ix35 achieved third spot in the compact crossover/SUV segment.
The significance of the APEAL survey was that it provided an indication of a brand’s perception and appeal among customers and David Sargent, vice-president of global vehicle research at JD Power & Associates said, there were two sides to the quality coin.
“It's about the things gone right and things gone wrong and they are important," he said. "Models that perform well on both measures generate higher levels of recommendation and higher brand loyalty.”
According to Reuters, Sargent regarded the "dramatically better" Sonata and the new Elantra as the main reasons for Hyundai’s improved position.
