TORRANCE, California - Honda America has acquired net vehicle exporter status in 2013 with 95% of cars and trucks built locally in the US.
It sent 108 705 Honda and Acura vehicles out of the country while importing 88 537 from Japan.
With sustained growth, Honda achieved record production of automobiles in 2013, both in North America (1 781 213) and in the US (1 309 917), enabling this first-ever net exporter achievement.
TEAM WORK
Tetsuo Iwamura, president and CEO of Honda North America, said: “This achievement is a result of the efforts of the tens of thousands of employees in America who develop and produce our vehicles and those who manage their export to global markets.”
Over the past three years, Honda has invested more than the equivalent of R30.1-billion to expand its US and North American auto production operations. As a result, today nearly 95% of the Honda and Acura cars and trucks sold in the US are made locally in North America.
Honda began to export vehicles from the US in 1987 and reached a million in cumulative auto exports from the US in late 2012.
