Ford's PE diesel built 'is go!'

PORT ELIZABETH  – Ford’s Struandale engine plant in Port Elizabeth officially launched the US automaker's new range of diesel engines.

In 2010 Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa confirmed the final investment of more than R3-billion in the Struandale plant for the new diesel engine. The automaker also announced that the Silverton assembly plant would be used for the all-new Ranger.

Jeff Nemeth, FMCSA president and CEO, said the new engine plant would be part of the brand’s global diesel engine programme.

“Today we celebrate a new era for the engine plant, as it officially comes on line as a strategic supplier of machined components for the global Duratorq diesel engine programme,” he said. “What the local team has achieved is simply remarkable, transforming the engine plant into a truly world-class facility and meeting the highest standards of design, engineering, efficiency and quality."

LOCALLY BUILT: Ford's new Ranger will be built locally at the Silverton Assembly Plant

Ford’s Duratorq diesel engine export programme involves the machining of 220 000 component sets per year, comprising the engine head, crankshaft and block. About 75 000 of these will be used for local engine assembly and the rest exported to Ford engine plants in Thailand and Argentina.

The Struandale plant will commence assembling its first production Duratorq diesel engines on June 27. The engines will be shipped to the Silverton plant for installation in the new Ranger, with full-scale production of the new bakkie scheduled to begin at the end of September 2011 for the domestic and global market.
