Fiat may abandon Chrysler deal

2009-04-15 13:59

Milan - Fiat's chief executive said he is ready to abandon plans to form a partnership with Chrysler LLC if the US car maker's unions refused to accept substantial cost cuts, according to a newspaper.

"Absolutely we are prepared to walk," Sergio Marchionne said in an interview published on the website of Canada's Globe and Mail on Wednesday.

"We cannot commit to this organisation unless we see light at the end of the tunnel."

Marchionne said he saw only a 50-50 chance of the partnership being formed due to the lack of progress on labour negotiations, especially on the side of the Canadian unions.

Fiat confirmed the comments made by Marchionne to the newspaper.

I personally think that Chrysler , if granted the bail - out funds will be able to reach becoming a profitable company again , they have great products and service and im a proud owner of one of these, we should not focus on everything that is portrayed in the media and base our arguments on factual results. Sure the relationship with Merc did not work out , but since Cerberus bought Chrysler out , they have been a much more customer orientated company than when part of merc..

If the American workers don't need their jobs, let them sit at home. They'll deserve Fiat abandoning this deal then. How absurd. I always thought something is better than nothing...

I'm surprised Fiat are even going down this road with Chrysler. Mercedes paid heavilly for this ill conceived marriage. Fiat should be very weary of any coalition with Chrysler as I'm sure they can't afford a similar DC type disaster...
