Ex-Audi SA boss heading McLaren

Former head of Audi SA, Greg Levine, has been appointed to lead the first full year of McLaren Automotive’s global commercial operations as sales and marketing director.

This year will see the commercial launch of the first “pure” McLaren high-performance sports cars, the McLaren MP4-12C – recently shown in South Africa.

South African-born Levine has more than 15 years of automotive industry experience, including his five years as head of Audi SA. He left there to take up the post of head of operations at Audi UK and has also had experience in Italy.

'BRIGHT FUTURE'

McLaren believes he will bring to the company “a broad and successful past and valuable exposure to commercially impactful marketing, retailer and customer programmes”.

Antony Sheriff, MD of McLaren Automotive, said: “I first met Greg while working together in Italy and knew then that he had a bright future in the car industry. He has rapidly moved up through the ranks and enjoyed great success in South Africa and the UK.

“His knowledge of the retail business and brand-building is excellent and the fact that he has chosen to step into this crucial role at McLaren is testimony to his drive and ambition and McLaren’s ability to persuade strong industry players to join our team.”

PIVOTAL TIME

Levine added: “McLaren’s plans for a brand-new car company are unique. They cover all aspects, from design and development to setting up a global retail network and launching technologies and processes that benefit the customer.

“I’ve watched this project grow with great interest and feel privileged to join such an exciting and dynamic brand.”

Levine takes over the global role at a pivotal time in McLaren’s launch plans. The final partners in the 35-strong global retail network will be confirmed ahead of the first 12C going on sale in the next few months and production has started at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, southern England.

The McLaren MP4-12C is the first in a range of high-performance sports cars planned by McLaren Automotive. It will go on sale in the UK and Europe at what the company calls “a groundbreaking price for a carbon chassis-based car” - from €200 000.

STARTED WITH NISSAN

About 1000 will be assembled in the first year of production for distribution through a network of 35 retailers worldwide – including South Africa.

Levine was born and educated in South Africa. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in accounting and marketing, followed by an honours degree and an MBA.  He has spent 15 years in the motor industry, starting his career at Nissan SA. This was followed by five years at Fiat Auto where he spent two years working in Italy and 18 months as the sales and marketing director of the South African organisation.

Levine was then appointed head of Audi SA, a position he held for five years before moving to the UK to become head of operations for Audi UK. Wheels24 wishes him well in his new position - the latest in a long line of auto executives to reach the seriously big time after experience in SA.
