The strike that over the past eight days has crippled South Africa’s vehicle manufacturing industry has been called off.
The Automobile Manufacturers Employers Organisation (Ameo) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) agreed to the settlement in Port Elizabeth on Friday.
The three-year agreement provides for across-the-board wage increases of 10% for 2010, 9% in 2011 and another 9% in 2012.
Parties have also agreed to stop the use of labour brokers from January 1, 2010 and to establish a statutory bargaining council.
Ameo estimates that around 17 000 vehicles were not built over the strike period.
