Volkswagen South Africa celebrates six decades in the country by enjoying its best production year yet, building close to 130 000 vehicles so far in 2011.
Volkswagen Group South Africa said in a statement that 128 535 Polo Vivo, Polo and CrossPolo vehicles were produced year-to-date at its Uitenhage facility in the Eastern Cape.
Since the first Beetle rolled off the Uitenhage production line on August 31, 1951, more than 2.9 million vehicles have been produced at the local plant.
2011 has been a big year for the local Volkswagen subsidiary: the locally-produced Polo was named joint SA Car of the Year in March, while the company was adjudged Manufacturer of the Year at the SA Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association awards held in October.
