Anti-Muslim e-mail rocks Merc SA

2009-03-24 08:46

Mercedes Benz SA has suspended two employees after they allegedly sent out an anti-muslim e-mail, the company said on Monday.

The two - from the company's Centurion head office - had been suspended pending a full investigation, company spokeswoman Annelise van der Laan told Sapa.

"This goes against our company philosophy and we view this very seriously... we heard about the incident this morning (Monday) and we then suspended them."

Mercedes Benz SA also apologised to Media Review Network, the muslim website.

The matter arose after the website received an e-mail written in English and Afrikaans, allegedly from a senior employee of Mercedes Benz SA.

"The e-mail is accompanied by a series of horrendous photographs of the arm of a child being run over by a motor vehicle... the photographs are accompanied by Hebrew text," Media Review Network said in a statement.

It said it found the e-mail "derogatory to say the least". It sent "very erroneous and inflammatory signals about Islam and Muslims".

The website took the matter up with Mercedes-Benz SA and received an apology from the Mercedes-Benz SA president and CEO, Hansgeorg Niefer.

Niefer assured Media Review Network that the employees acted on their own initiative.

"The policy of Mercedes-Benz South Africa, with regard to company resources is zero tolerance."

Media Review Network said it had been advised that disciplinary action was initiated.

Niefer also gave the assurance that Mercedes-Benz South Africa would ensure that "something like this does not happen again", according to the website.

They're not revealing too much about this matter, but are suggesting we believe the pictures and accompanying text were of a derogatory nature. Perhaps it was just stating some facts about accident cases in Arabian countries. Let us not be manipulated by press indoctrinations until we know more..

I wonder if they'll send a suicide bomber into mercedes benz's head office. Watch out for low flying airliners...

What happened to the right to freedom of speech which is entrenched in our constitution? Where does Mercedes-Benz draw the line between intolerance and the truth?Or maybe a certain group has too much control over it's purse strings?

The Hebrew writing on the article will give an indication who is behind this anti-Muslim email. This was a road show and the email omits the last picture which shows the child completely unharmed. To use children in this way is condemned in Islam. Punishment in Islam is only metered out against sane adults who are habitual criminals and there must be no doubt that that person has committed the crime. Person who steals out of dire necessity is not punished but his circumstances will be investigated and his needs seen to from the National Treasury by way of zakaat.

Rule one. Company E mail is for buisiness. Private non buisiness related things should be kept to your Gmail/webmail etc etc.

Carte Blanche did a survey about the rag magazine of UCT about the content which referred to Christians. The survey came out in favour of freedom of speech. Why all the fuss now? Because it has to do wiyh Muslims? What is the difference then I ask you?

if anything it is probably a set up - why would there be Hebrew text? This sounds like an email sent by a Muslim to make the Joooos look evil and bad by pointing out the atrocity and the Muslim grp specifically had to mention the Hebrew text - all a little toooooooo suspicious for any rational person... some forensics into the origins would be welcomed

What's all the fuzz about. The article appears to be true. What is worrying is that all the Human Rights groups are quiet about this horrendous torturing of small kids and it should be condemned publicly until rooted out.

If this is the case, then almost all employees of all companies should be fired. Fact is, the muslims are ok to bash other religions (even promote it), but when the truth about them comes out, they get all self-righteous.

Do you guys really think that anti-this and anti-that makes it acceptable? Two wrongs do not make right! The truth will reveal itself in time, it's for us to decide.

Johndoe. Your level of "offensive-to-some" could mean that porn that has been circulating for a while makes it a non-suspendable offense? Intolerance should be dealt with appropriately no matter what the subject.

and what about anit-christ e-mail. no one has a problem with that, in fact, it's the muslims that does that. if the truth us revealed, why not.

MBSA did this a few years ago when employees forwared emails of a sexual nature, people were fired so expect these guys also to get the boot, good excuse in this current climate.Seems like MBSA employees have little to do.

Ive seen that email and it is horrendous! People have been forwarding it for a while now, so should everyone be suspended for forwarding an offensive-to-some email? What about those anti-Israel emails that have done the rounds...same difference?
