Alfa Romeo’s keenly anticipated return to the US market was expected in 2007. The 8C has dabbled stateside this year, yet an expanded range, which was supposed to roll out during 2009, is now only penned in for 2011

Alfa Romeo’s 13 year hiatus from the American market is set to continue for a little while longer.

During the halcyon days of 2006 Alfa Romeo vowed to return to the American market it had forsaken in 1995 by 2009.

In May this year talk was still of a triumphant centennial return to the American domestic market, then the global financial crisis and debt malaise happened, necessitating a revised strategy penning 2011 as a possible return date.

With global demand tapering off at a frightening rate Fiat has made a judgement call, postponing the emotional second coming of Alfa to the North American market; itself in seemingly precipitous decline.

When the fabled Turinese marquee does roll onto the highways of the US around 2011 expect the headline act 8C performance car (currently available in limited numbers stateside) to be joined by the 159 sedan (or its replacement depending on production cycles) and finally the Mito to reinforce the bottom end.

Alfa had lofty aims of establishing a production facility in the US too; producing 20 000 units a year by 2012.

Considering Alfa expected to sell 300 000 cars in China during 2010 – now downgraded to 50 000 – the reality of the current market is proving seemingly incommensurable with the optimistic conjecture of manufacturers.
