Incoming! Plane hits bakkie on highway

RENO, Nevada - A small plane with engine trouble collided with a bakkie during an emergency landing on a Nevada, US, highway on Saturday (July 26), authorities said.

At least two people were aboard the plane and two people were in the truck when the collision occurred about 9am on a rural, two-lane section of Nevada Route 445, about 32km north of Reno, Nevada highway patrol Lieutenant Kevin Honea said.

All four had minor injuries; one in the plane had cuts from glass.

CRASH UNDER INVESTIGATION

Honea said: "Any time you hear about a plane v. car, you're thinking the worst. I'm happy to report that nobody had to be taken to hospital."

Honea said the plane caught fire and was destroyed but he was unsure of the extent of damage to the bakkie. The vehicle was heading north on the 64km long highway, which links the Reno area to a desert lake.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said the plane, an experimental Thunder Mustang, was forced to land on the highway after losing power soon after leaving Reno for South Dakota with a fuel stop planned for Wyoming.

The single-engine plane was made by Frederick Roscher in 2011; he was also identified as the pilot. The crash is under investigation by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.
