Hail blitz mauls Gauteng cops

JOHANNESBURG - A hailstorm forced police to seek shelter as several areas in Gauteng were hammered by a storm.

An Ekurhuleni metro police spokesman said hailstones the size of golf balls shattered their car's windscreen and side mirror on Sunday, October 21 2012.

'12 WINDOWS KO!'

The spokesman added: "(The hail) came down like a ton of bricks. Patrolling Metro police ran for cover."

The hail appeared to have been heaviest in Edenvale, Midrand, Germiston, Boksburg and Benoni.

Residents tweeted as the hailstorm struck. One wrote: "What a scary experience yesterday really bad weather hail so big damaged my younger sister kids' playroom."

"Tennis ball sized hail at our place on Saturday crazy."

"Talk about hail damage... 12 windows KO!".

"Every car in the East Rand that wasn't under cover or was on the road is damaged. Mine has 3 dents on boot."

"My moms Clio took a beating... hail damage all over! It went right through the body work."
