Cape Town - Statistics South Africa has published its annual victims of crime survey (VOCS).

The survey of around 30 000 provides details of personal experiences of crime. It also covers how thieves break into cars and what time they strike their victims. The reporting period is of April 2015 to March 2016.

Stats SA said:  "While the VOCS cannot replace police statistics, it can be a rich source of information which will assist in the planning of crime prevention as well as providing a more holistic picture of crime in South Africa. The data can be used for the development of policies and strategies, as well as for crime prevention and public education programmes.

"The VOCS 2015/16 will also be used to pilot the possibility of integrating the crime statistics obtained from administrative data with those of a sample survey in order to maximise our understanding of the extent of crime and the under-reporting of crime."

Some interesting stats:

• 47.7% of the people who said they had a car stolen, said it was from their home.
• 45.8% said it was at night and 61.8% said it was during the week.
•5.3% said the car was stolen while it was parked near work, 13.1% said it was stolen while at the shops, an 17% from a parking lot
