Holiday roadtrip: Don't wait until the last minute to service your car

MAINTAINING YOUR CAR: Every year the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads over long weekends and especially during the Easter break is alarming and 2017 is no different.Image: iStock.

Cape Town -  The Easter weekend took a grim toll on South African motorists. With another long weekend ahead in April, it's important to make sure your vehicle is in top shape.

Vishal Premlall of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), says all drivers need to take the servicing of their vehicles seriously ahead of the holidays.

Taking precaution

Premlall says: “Vehicles that have not been serviced and are not roadworthy attempting to make long road trips are a hazard, not only to the passengers inside them but to other drivers too.

"A tyre blow-out, for example, can result in pieces of rubber flying up onto the road, hitting other vehicles and causing accidents as drivers swerve to avoid the debris."

He highly recommends that vehicle owners get their vehicles checked and serviced before venturing out on the road.

“Leaving it until a day or two before departure is not a good idea. What motorists don’t realise is that should maintenance be needed on their vehicle and spare parts are not in stock, these need to be ordered. This could take several days, if they are available at all. It is risky leaving things to the last minute and could put a real dampener on holiday plans,” says Premlall.

During a service, mechanics will do a thorough check of the vehicle which will include a road test and an assessment of the following parts:

 • Lights
 • Suspension
 • Drive lines
 • Brakes
 • Tyres, including the spare and tools
 • Fluid levels
 • Wipers and windscreen
 • V Belts, and
 • Exhaust.

Using reliable mechanics

If a problem is identified, the mechanic will be able to advise the vehicle owner and provide a quote for repairs needed. Premlall strongly recommends using an accredited workshop.

“Believe it or not we are a few weeks away from the long weekend in March and the Easter weekend in April. Don’t wait. Get your vehicle in tip top condition now,” he concludes.
