Cape Town - With South Africa readying to celebrate the strong, powerful and influential women of this country, Wheels24 celebrates the achievements of a handful of women in motoring.
Though the list of South African women who changed and made an impact on the automotive industry - both locally and abroad - is vast and expansive, we had to trim it down to just seven.
We’ve also included three international pioneers at the end of the list.
Making SA proud
The list includes the likes of Esther Mahlangu. In 1991 she was given the opportunity to paint her unique artwork on a BMW 525i and in 2016 she did it again on a BMW 7-Series. Most recently, Mahlangu showcased her talents on a 1950’s BMW Isetta 300 by KZN businesswoman Manana Nhlanhla.
Desiré Wilson raced in Formula 1 and is one of five women to have done so. She won the 1980 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch.
Oona Scheepers is another proudly South African export who has made a monumental impact on the Volkswagen Group as a whole and currently heads up a design department at the automaker's headquarters.
The youngest lady in our list, Paige Lindenberg, is the only female in a group of 18 young South Africans to participate in an FIA endorsed motorsport programme.
