As with the Renault Megane CC and Peugeot 307 CC the open top Golf will ditch its canvas roof in favour of a retractable metal roof. There are even rumours that the car could get a glass panelled roof similar to that of the Megane.
This new VW drop-top will share its underpinning and engine range with the Golf. Its engine line-up will include the GTI's potent 147 kW 2-litre FSI turbo engine. It will also be available with the company's 2.0 TDI engine.
According to insiders the interior will be different from the standard Golf, featuring upgraded trim and spec levels.
It is expected that VW will launch the car at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. There is no indication yet when it will go on sale in South Africa.
