2012 Coty finalists - all 10 of them

2011-10-06 21:57

It's Car of the Year time again in South Africa and this year the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists and its jury of 30 members has come up with 10 cars to vie for the title.

The List of Ten was announced at the end of the first of two "media days" ahead of the public opening of the 2011 Johannesburg International Motor Show at the Nasrec showgrounds on Saturday, October 8.

So, the 10 finalists to be tested and judged early in 2012 in Gauteng for the 2012 SAGMJ Car of the Year competition will be (in alphabetical order) and all models launched during 2011 are (each link will take you to the relevant manufacturer's website):

Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 125kW MultiAir Distinctive
Audi A6 3.0 T TDI Quattro S tronic
Citroen DS4 THP 200 Sport
Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI Trend Sedan Powershift
Hyundai Elantra 1.8 GLS
Kia Picanto 1.2 EX
Mercedes Benz SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY
Peugeot 5008 2.0 HDi Active Man
Suzuki Kizashi 2.4 SDLX Man
VW Jetta 1.4 TSI 118kW Highline

The next step in the process will determine the winner from a two-day test session to be held in February 2012 at the Gerotek test facility west of Pretoria where the cars will be assessed independently by the Jury members.

In keeping with the broadened competition, the testing at Gerotek will allow the vehicles to be evaluated under the conditions in which each would be expected to perform. Routes are designed to evaluate 4x4s or sports cars, as the average consumer would use them.

There were, in fact, two SA Cars of the Year in 2011 when, unexpectedly, two cars tied for the honour - VW's Poli TDI and BMW's 530D - and caused extreme consternation and in some quarters unkind amusement in the auto industry.

EVERYTHING UNDER SCRUTINY

While jury members are already familiar with the vehicles they have voted into the final, the testing days offer an opportunity to re-acquaint themselves with the cars.

The testers will be expected to pay close attention to the cars’ aesthetics, build quality and ergonomics, while considering their cost, safety features and replacement parts prices. Fuel consumption data is also considered.

South Africa’s Car of the Year competition claims to be unique in the world in that it is determined by three rounds of voting, the first which is open to all full members of the SAGMJ yields the semi-finalists, a second round open to the only the jury determines the finalists and then a final allocation of points after a two-day evaluation the winner.

The winner of the 2012 South African Car the Year competition will be announced in March, 2012.

My money is one the Picanto, but this SA COTY thing is so biased, the Jetta or the A6 will probably win.

      And so they should.

  • x - 2011-10-07 09:29

Why do we always, year after year, have a selection of the MOST boring cars in the world? This is clearly selection by committee. I can only assume that the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists is a bunch of anal old men.

      Flashsa - 2011-10-07 09:38

Take a DS4 for a test drive - it is FAR from boring I can assure you - even in Diesel spec.

I do like the alfa. I think it is the car I like most int hat list. My point was that the SACOTY finalist list is normally 90% boring cars that only retired people would buy. K you have a good memory.

      Kukushe - 2011-10-07 17:31

Whick cars should have made the cut and didn't? The last 12 months hasn't been that good. i think these 10 (maybe not the Jetta) deserves their place in the finals. Next year will be a bumper year, with the following cars on their way: 1) Audi A3 2) BMW 1 series 3) BMW 3 series 4) Honda Civic 5) Toyota Yaris 6) Kia Rio (launced late to qualify this year) Can't wait as i am due for a new car then...

      anon - 2011-10-10 09:05

The DS4 is far from boring? Come, quickly, use some smoke and mirror car terms like : sporty, nippy, cute, neat, fun, etc. Secondly, the Alfa does indeed look great, but again, the 1.4 spec isn't exactly inspiring.

  • RB - 2011-10-07 09:48

I never thought I would be saying this - but it looks like the Hyundai is the most likely winner.

  • lody - 2011-10-07 09:52

it is arguably the most boring of the lot, but i would put my money on that Hyundai. now i did not say that it is not a good car. i said it was boring

      x - 2011-10-07 09:57

Somehow, no matter the colour - they are all beige.

  • lody - 2011-10-07 09:56

left field winners would be the Alfa and DS4. both are really good looking and packaged surprisingly well compared to say a golf (read:expensive) 6 :)

  • FordKop - 2011-10-07 10:43

Trust me the Focus is the winner by a mile. Mark me down as much as you like, but i'll be excepting all your apologies in March 2012. Blue oval for life.

My Money is on the Elantra. Good looker, great value, good reliability. If you buy with your head instead of your heart, this will be the one. My heart says Alfa Alfa ALfa.

  • lumifi - 2011-10-07 13:24

If there is a car that deserves to win is the Ford Focus. Advanced and innoveation in terms of Kinetic design, high point thecnology and ultra modern features.

Lol lumifi... funny you say that cos all that sounds like Volvo technology

      ArthurDent - 2011-10-07 14:11

Not a bad option, but the competition in the C segment (Elantra) is better. You must have had a minor stroke last year when the Polo shared the spoils with the 530d.

      ArthurDent - 2011-10-07 14:11

  • Mark Simons - 2011-10-07 13:55

My bet is squarely on the Hyundai Elantra. The Focus and the Jetta just looks so dull. VW and Ford did not really move the C Segment market to the next level. All they done was look inwards and just put right the problems of the old ones. What you need is evolution in leaps and bounds. In my opinion the Elantra, the Giulietta, and Kia in general have done exactly that. It’s almost as if they have skipped a model and gave is something we only should have gotten in a year or two from now.

  • brutalbanana - 2011-10-07 14:13

It must be the Picanto, Elantra or DS4, if you consider what you get for your money. My money is on the Picanto.

  • ArthurDent - 2011-10-07 14:14

Current standings according to the voting on the home page: 1. Elantra 22% 2. Picanto 17% 3. Giulietta 15% Seems that the average intelligence on this web site is not to shabby

      ArthurDent - 2011-10-11 14:02

      A few days later: 1. Elantra 20% 2. Jetta 19% 3. Focus 16%

  • Redwine - 2011-10-07 15:45

This is a no brainer! Could any car even hope to compare with the SLK? Forget price etc This is a master piece any hot blooded human being can only dream of owning

      Vickers - 2011-10-07 16:00

The problem is price is a BIG factor. It rarely happens that the most expensive competitor wins this. Remember when making your buying decision the first thing you think about is what you can afford.

      Redwine - 2011-10-07 17:12

It is car of the year not price of the year plus you get what you pay for

      x - 2011-10-08 00:19

Exactly... So why is the new slk nominated and not the SLS instead?

  • Gore - 2011-10-07 16:41

Someone please confirm for me that indeed - there is no BMW or TOYOTA, am I now blind? e,eh what a pleasure to miss them!!

      Kukushe - 2011-10-07 17:39

There was no BMW that qualified, no wait the 6 Series did, but what was the chance of it making the list (it's not exactly mainstream, and its too pricey, I'm sure BMW wouldn't mind...) BMW fans need to wait for next year when the new 1 and 3 series might both make the list. As for Toyota, the less said the better.

      Chronoman - 2011-10-10 13:36

Also no Honda. Honda was asked if it could be omitted from this year's competition because it has a stable full of winners already.

      Rooi gevaar - 2011-10-10 16:11

Some people have commented that it is rigged. The fact that there is no Toyota proved otherwise. I however support the CAR magazine standpoint that you have to judge in different categories. So no I think it is a waste of time.

  • rollo.minish - 2011-10-08 11:00

In my view VW has proven themselves as a Global competitor when it comes to quality cars.they should also be in line for this years Coty 2012.Go VW

      Chronoman - 2011-10-10 13:39

@rollo.minish, I'm sure you don't allow the JD Power Quality Surveys to get into your head. VW is, year in and year out among the worst performers when it comes to quality. Good looking cars, no doubt, but really poor quality and even more so if you consider the prices VW has the cheek to ask for their products.

      ArthurDent - 2011-10-10 13:56

      Latest South African JDPower Quality survey MANUFACTURER RANKING: PASSENGER VEHICLES: (PP100) 1. Mercedes-Benz (103) 2. Honda (121) 3. Audi (133) 4. BMW (138) 5. Mazda (142) 6. Kia (145) 7. Volvo (145) 8. Suzuki (147) 9. Toyota (172) 10. Hyundai (179) 11. Land Rover (184) Segment Average (184) 12. Volkswagen (193) 13. Chevrolet (200) 14. Daihatsu (200) 15. Ford (212) 16. Nissan (260) 17. Renault (285) Compared to Ford Nissan and Renault, VW is not that bad. Smaller manufacturers did not feature because the sample size were not big enough)
