Lexus South Africa will enter "the land of the small car” in August, 2011 with the new CT 200h hatchback.
It's the first full hybrid to contest the premium hatchback segment and Lexus sees it competing against BMW's 1 Series and Audi's A3. The CT 200h will also invite younger customers to explore the Lexus brand, the company hopes, with its “luxury” and “levels of refinement”.
The company already has a strong hybrid showing in South Africa with hybrid versions of its GS sedan, RX SUV and LS limousine.
DRIVING CHOICES
The new four-door, hatch-backed CT 200h has a 1.8-litre VVTi engine capable of 73kW at 5200rpm and a 40kW electric motor. Drive is sent to the front wheels through an electronic constantatly variable transmission - a transmission familiar to Toyota Prius drivers.
Four driving modes – normal, EV, eco and sport – are offered but Lexus says it will place great emphasis on the CT 200h’s sporting prowess. Designed as a “driver’s car”, the CT 200h uses lateral performance shock-absorbers front and rear and its body, the automaker says, has been reinforced throughout for both great rigidity and a high-quality ride.
More local details are sure to be shared closer to the hybrid hatchback’s launch.
