Zuma: 'Payways' are 'stayways'

2012-03-16 09:52

Johannesburg - Jacob Zuma has quashed hopes that the Gauteng e-tolling system would be scrapped.

"The Gauteng economy cannot afford any impediment to traffic flow," the president said at a New Age and SABC business briefing in Port Elizabeth. "Such an impediment will stifle economic growth that leads to job creation."

The roads in general couldn't handle the load and, he added, and this had affected road users and economic development.

BEYOND CAPABILITIES

Tolling Gauteng's freeways - "payways", as they are becoming known - had been consulted on and accepted by the Cabinet.

Zuma said: "The rationale behind the freeways improvement project is that Gauteng, which generates nearly 38% of the total value of South Africa's economic activities, has developed beyond its infrastructural capabilities.

"The open tolling system will assist the government to obtain revenue to improve the road infrastructure, service debt already incurred for the upgraded Gauteng freeway network, and ensure a well-maintained and upgraded road network into the future."

He understood that it was an additional financial burden for people affected by poverty and unemployment but the infrastructure development would create jobs to help eradicate the burden.

"We plead for your understanding because, at the end of the day, we have to develop and strengthen the Gauteng road infrastructure."

Don’t buy e-tags. I am not going to let anybody deduct money from my account without proof of service. I will insist that Sanral POST all photographs of my car (with my number plates) going through the toll gates. They cannot email them because my spam blocker won’t allow them. Then if they can get that right then maybe I will pay. My company does not pay for anything without the vendor supplying proof of delivery. Similarly I will not pay for any toll without SANRAL proving to me that MY car with my number plate went through the toll.

Please show us how these road upgrades has improved traffic flow!!! The highways are clogged up EXACTLY the same as before the upgrades took place during every peak period!!! Why don't you rather make those that stole all the money accountable, and get them to pay it back??? Oh, yes, you are probably one of them...

      Eddy - 2012-03-18 09:44

No Gareth, it's not "probably", it's "definately"!

      musazwane - 2012-08-03 17:20

Something has to make up for all the money they steal, you can only steal so much from one pool...so you create another so you can steal form that one...

Since the ANC have been in control, I have paid taxes and fuel levies (for the past 17yrs) together with a few million other South Africans. Part of those taxes and the fuel levy are suppose to have been for road maintenance and upgrades. But through corruption, theft, mismanagement & greed, this did not happen!..Now we are expected to pay again while all along we still pay outrageous fuel prices because of ridiculous fuel levies!.....Come lock me up, cancel my drivers licence and even refuse to renew my vehicles licence disk, I STILL WILL NOT PAY!
