Woman 'steals' own car

A Pretoria woman was arrested and detained for more than 24 hours after she went to a police station to check the status of a car she had bought.

Jacoline Lipharama wanted police at the Mamelodi police station to check whether the second-hand Toyota Conquest she had paid R33 000 for was a stolen vehicle or not.

"I provided the police with the particulars of the person who had sold the car to me, including copies of his ID [identity document] and bank statements.

"He is the one who was supposed to be arrested," Lipharama said to the Pretoria News on Friday.

BEATING BRIBES

Lipharama was detained on Tuesday and released on Wednesday evening as the charges of possession of a stolen vehicle were dropped in the Mamelodi Magistrate's Court.

She said she was released six hours after the charges were withdrawn in court.

The police allegedly refused to release her earlier, accusing her of bribing court officials to have the charges dropped.
