Volvo’s full-sized XC90 SUV will not be replaced.
According to Swedish media reports the company does not see required demand in future justifying a second generation XC90.
Volvo’s XC60 SUV and XC70 estate will tally the company’s future pseudo off-road marketing requirements.
The XC90 was launched just as the market for V8 SUVs was reaching its peak.
As the global economy (and market sentiment) turned against oversized SUVs, Volvo’s XC90 has lost sales momentum - as buyers seek refuge behind the wheel of established premium brands such as Audi, Land Rover, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
A successor (of sorts) for XC90 will be based on the VCC concept car shown back in 2003.
The '90' nomenclature is expected to be rerolled as the V90F and will be powered by a range of engines encompassing petrol V6 and four-cylinder power, augmented by a five-cylinder turbodiesel.
In terms of design the V90F will be a large crossover vehicle positioned at the very (niche) Mercedes-Benz R-Class end of the market.
Industry insiders expect a production version to debut by 2012.
Does Volvo really need a R-Class clone in its line-up though?
