VW dealer 'official' in Soweto

A R30-million state-of-the-art Volkswagen dealer has been officially opened in the heart of Soweto, close to the town’s “struggle” landmark streets and monuments.

Soweto Volkswagen is a joint venture between Barloworld Automotive and the Maponya Group – the latter already owner of the town’s Maponya Mall – and was opened by when deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on March 29. 2012.
 
David Powels, MD of VW Group South Africa, said: “The opening of Soweto VW is a milestones in the history of VW SA that spans more than 60 years. The VW brand has become very much part of the fabric of South Africa.”

'SNAPSHOT' DESIGN

 
Soweto VW is one of the first green-field VW modular concept designs in the South African dealer operation. The design concept’s distinguishing element is the white frame as a “snapshot” design principle. It claims to bring the various aspects of the brand into focus and “directs the viewer’s attention to the contents of the frame”.

The 2900m2 dealership has been in operation since December 2011 and supplies new and used vehicles, service and retail parts.
 
Gary Berndt, general manager of Soweto VW said: “The dealer has enormous potential as more Soweto people become aware of its existence and location. We have to date achieved our sales targets and our service business is picking up speed. We plan to open our service facility at weekends and on public holidays so customers’ vehicles can be serviced on work-free days.”
