Turbo twin is engine of 2011

BMW and Fiat won four categories each at the 2011 International Engine of the Year Awards, with an entry-level powerplant proving to be the tie-breaker.

Although BMW and Fiat took eight of the 12 overall awards, it was the Italian auto giant which took home the overall trophy.

SMALL, YET PERFECTLY FORMED

Fiat’s tiny 875cc TwinAir engine was voted as best new engine of 2011, Green engine of the year, best sub 1-litre engine and therefore, unsurprisingly, took overall honours as best engine of 2011. Not a bad achievement for a two-cylinder turbo producing a mere 63kW.

Fiat’s performance brand, Ferrari, weighed in with two more awards as the Maranello manufacturer’s 4.5-litre V8 (powering its 458 model) was crowned best engine above 4-litres in capacity and best overall performance engine.

BMW fans can take solace with the brand’s four awards though.

Munich's finest mechanical engineers bagged four category wins, including the '3-litre to 4-litre' category for its 4-litre V8 found in the M3; the '2.5-litre to 3-litre' category for its 3-litre DI Twin Turbo fitted across much of its range; the '1.8-litre to 2-litre' category for its 2-litre Twin Turbo diesel engine found in the 123d and X1; and the '1.4-litre to 1.8-litre' category for its 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo engine co-developed with PSA Peugeot Citroën, which also scooped the same Award.

The ‘Werke’s performance showed clear superiority to its chief German rivals VW and Audi, who only managed to win one award each…

VW's 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger engine, which won the overall International Engine of the Year title in both 2009 and 2010, once again defended its crown in the '1-litre to 1.4-litre' category.

Fiat's award winning 875cc TwinAir engine will become available to South African 500 customers later in 2011.
