Toyota wagon a fuel champion

This Toyota may no longer be a fixture in South African car showrooms but a wagon version has just covered 1450km on less than a tank of diesel.

An Avensis Tourer with a two-litre D-4D engine (six-speed manual) was driven the length of Britain from Land's End in the far south-west to John O’Groats in the far north-east of Scotland by journalists Joe Clifford and Andrew Biddle of Banzai magazine using an average of 3.95 litres/100km of diesel.

BEYOND ESTIMATES

The pair topped off the Avensis’s 60-litre tank at the start of their three-day journey and programmed their route on the car’s Touch & Go navigation system. At that point, the car’s trip computer indicated a driving range of 933km…

The Avensis went on to cover a total distance of 1450km and, according to the duo, more than 274km on the last bar of the fuel gauge alone.

Clifford said: "The Toyota shrugged off the distance and showed such fuel frugality that we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it highly. That it is also comfortable, roomy, tax-friendly for business users, bursting with kit and beautifully built are simply bonuses."

Toyota SA told Wheels24 there are were plans to return the Avensis to the local market.
