Top pet names for cars

2009-02-26 15:12

Love Machine, Bessey and Muscles – these are just some of the nicknames drivers choose for their cars, reveals a UK survey from HPI, an independent vehicle information provider.

The HPI survey revealed that over 50% of participants admitted to giving their vehicle a pet name.

A similar survey by HPI in 2003 revealed that celebrity names were top favourites for drivers to give their cars. However, the likes of Kylie and Charlie have had to move over for Buster, Moocher and Boomzilla in 2008, as drivers are getting more creative with names.

To show just how attached some drivers are to their cars, HPI asked participants to indicate whether they think their vehicle is male or female. 40% of respondents said their car is female while only 27% referred to it as male.

'If a car looks too good to be true, it usually is'

Whether it’s Lucky or Speedy, HPI advises buyers to be aware of dodgy vendors looking to sell a vehicle with more to hide than just its name.

This article makes me miss my trusty old Tazz who was recently traded in for something with ABS and airbags. Her name was Slakkie, because she was so slow (especially when the AC was on!). Slakkie, I hope your new owner is looking after you well, and has figured out how to work your safetybelt... :)

This article really made my life feel enriched...

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-27 09:35

  • NdP - 2009-02-27 09:39

Also had a white 1.3 Tazz, her name was SNOWIE. What a trustworthy car, drove it for 6 years, never broke down even once, but had a problem stopping on wet days. bought it for R50K, traded it in for R30K with 365 000 KM on the clock. Snowie my love, i miss you!

  • Rish - 2009-02-27 10:33

My Alfa GT is called Delilah because she looks the business and I bought her against 'common wisdom' and my wise father's words. Had to replace her engine last year after she let me down when I needed her most - in the middle of nowhere on my way from Botswana with no battery power in my cellphone! That's how she got her name!

@NdP- do agree you have to be smoking weed or have to be one of those that attend's group session that was advise by your doctor, due to there is a short some where in your mind, if you give your car a name.

  • BRAD - 2009-02-27 11:09

my golf 1's name "moenie vat n kans"

  • AH - 2009-02-27 11:21

I always name my cars. My first car was a red Hyundai Accent named Spikkel. My second car, a green Getz named Shrekki and the silver Materia I currently own is a girl and named Matewis or sometimes I call her Maatjie.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-27 11:59

My 1st car was a caramel brown 1981 Toyota Corrolla Liftback named "Biscuit". Then I got a '99 Corsa GSI and named it "Pocket Rocket". My following car was a VW Polo named "Marco" and now my new shape Astra is called "Buddy"!

  • Graeme - 2009-02-27 12:25

It's funny how everyone names their LAME cars, so far no one has said what the name of their Porcshe is. Probably 'cause nobody wants to disguise their nice car, and pretend their dreary car has "personality".

  • panda - 2009-02-27 12:28

my renault clio 2 was named 'blanch'. i miss her

  • NCL - 2009-02-27 13:25

I never named a car of mine and hate it when people talk about their cars while calling it "she". What do they call their wifes or girls, "it". I love cars, but it hasn't got a personality, so I treat it whith the respect it deserves and the metal it is. If you think it has a personality, than it is a piece of junk that break down frequently and when you need it the most. Reliable and good cars only get called names if it break down unexpectedly, but that names cannot be written here. Enjoy your named cars.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-27 14:18

NCL, you must be driving a pretty unreliable car hey!! People with Porsches don't get attached to them, they get rid of them as soon as another one with a different wheel design comes up. We small car peoples love them cuz they represent our livelihood, help us make money, unfortunately some get to help spend the money in a hectic way as well. Help us live life, achieve things, they are not just toys.

  • Davey - 2009-02-27 15:10

My car is called black magic. 400 Black magical ponies...

  • Drew - 2009-02-27 16:16

The first car I named was an old gold BMW 318i called Toby, followed by a Golf 4 called Moby and then a BMW compact called Pig (short for Pigwidgeon).

  • Rish - 2009-02-27 16:46

Reason for Porsche owners not naming their cars is because (modern) Porsches have no soul! They are technically competent machines yes - useful for hammering around the track and embarassing lesser mortals from robot to robot in relative comfort, but their owners rarely get attached them because they are merely machines, with very little other purpose in their automotive life. Graeme and NCL, stop creating a non-existent car class-war!!! From the way you pedastal Porsche owners, I can see your car ownership ceiling has Porsche written on it, so keep dreaming guys! Naming cars has nothing to do with how much it costs - it has to do with your emotional attachment to it. Maserati, Alfa (i'm biased here) and classic Jag owners think differently - those cars have heart and therefore much easier to anthromorphisise them! I reckon NCL drives a bog-standard beige Landcruiser pickup with the gray steel rims. hehehe

  • Sabaki - 2009-02-27 16:59

Though not a name really, but an adjective, I refer to my 335i as "Stealth" or "Subtle". Sometimes "Sleeper".

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-27 17:24

My first car was a White Jetta 2 1600 in excellent nick which I called "Jetta Knight" as in 'Jedi Knight' from the Star Wars movies which I grew up watching in the early '80s.......I also called her Jettani. I get such a thrill whenever I see her. We parted ways back in 2004....

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-27 17:28

I am a bit of a Trekkie, so my cars have always been named after the ships they made me think of. My Corsa GSi was USS Enterprise, my Tazz USS Voyager & my new Fiesta USS Excelsior. The guys at work tease me & always ask me how my fisher boats are doing. lol SW

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-01 09:01

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-01 14:31

  • Marie Ferrari - 2009-03-01 15:24

  • Ashley Lemmer - 2009-03-02 07:03

My black 2006 Golf GTI DSG was referred to as The Beast.

  • Eddie - 2009-03-02 11:22

I have a 1981 BMW R100 bike as well as a 2001 BMW 530d. The bike's name is Hitler, because one of my friends said it looks like something the German SS would ride around on. My car's name is Lufthansa, because she rides as quietly, comfortably and feels like a airliner when accelerating. Previous cars were a 98 Jetta 3 CLX named Grumpy because her alarm sometimes went off when unlocking her in the morning, and a 98 CLi named Maggie because of her beautiful BBS Mags.

  • VWFan - 2009-03-02 13:42

I had a grey Polo, his name was Hawk. Now have a Golf5 her name is Snowy...so cute!

  • Barbara - 2009-03-02 13:48

A few years ago I had a 1986 blue and white VW city golf and she had 2 names. Dory from finding nemo and Saartjie (the sasol ad long ago about the donkey car). I have a blue 2001 Fiesta and her name is gonzales as she is only a 1.4 but acts like she is a 2.0

  • 330d - 2009-03-02 14:16

My white BMW 330d is called Patricia (the Blond). She is blond, acts blond when it comes to the navigation and when you ride her hard; she performs better than any other. I disagree with NCL, a car does have a soul and I frequently talk to Patricia. My wife finds it very ammusing and has defended Patricia's actions recently when the fuel pump broke and I swore at her. When your wife defends your car who you talk to, then a car must have a soul.

  • Claire - 2009-03-02 14:52

I think it has to do with first cars. Mine was called Gofshniggel. A 1983 Corolla. I'm still surprised I never blew the engine the way I used to push that little thing! Had about 30 cars since and never named any others.

  • Don - 2009-03-02 15:04

I drive a Polo 1.6 hatch & its name is blue panty. Got it from a friend of mine. I'm sure you can guess that it's blue & its clearly male. Hint, hint

  • Sam - 2009-03-02 15:47

My husband had a yellow cab called Flash, and then he got a green 2001 Corsa named Shadow and now he drives a blue 2001 Bantam named Sky. I once had a green Mia named Lizzy.

  • Gareth - 2009-03-03 10:09

My previous car was a 2006 Opel Corsa CDTI... her name was Deedee... moving up in the world, i bought a Land Rover Freelander, which compared, is quite a "bus" Her name is Isabella, and i often joke that she has a weight problem, especially as all my friends know how i enjoy speed at the push of a pedal!

  • AH - 2009-03-03 18:32

My husband's got a V50 Volvo and he named him Sven. Before that he had a Toyota bakkie which he named Proppies. There is nothing wrong with people that name their cars, it makes you love your car more and enjoy your car more. Life is dull enough as it is!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-05 13:53

I am glad I am not the only one that names their car. My first car was a Ford Lazer named Lizzy, and everyone I knew knew her as such. My current car is a Rav4 named Rofti (after Brakkenjan's horse), not a lot of people get that one.
