Top Gear blows battery-car test

Top Gear's battery-car battle came to a sudden halt when one of the vehicles needed an impromptu charge. We smell another lawsuit on the way...

Top Gear has been in hot water over electric vehicles since Tesla launched its suit against them earlier in 2011. Unperturbed, the show filmed a battle between Jeremy Clarkson and James May getting behind the wheel of Nissan's LEAF and Mitsubishi’s i-MIEV.

Unfortunately the battle stalled when the Top Gear duo's vehicles ran out of charge. They were stranded near a university in Lincoln, UK, and had to recharge the vehicles with extension cords running through the campus building.

Students gathered around as they waited for their vehicles to "fill up". Clarkson commented that he was amazed by the turnout but would be going for a cup of tea while they waited.

RECHARGE NEEDED

"It's amazing how many people turned out just to watch two portly middle-aged men fooling around. Although we were testing two electric cars in a genuinely sensible way to see how they work," said Clarkson. "So, while they're charging, we're going for a cup of tea."

The pro-battery car crowd is wary that both the LEAF and iON will be unfairly rubbished in the programme.

"Oh boy! I love Top Gear but I can picture the episode already...'We ran out of electricity and had to drive away in gas cars so this confirms EVs will never work for anyone'. (Best said in a Jeremy Clarkson voice)" commented Bored1980 on YouTube.

Tesla has launched its legal action against the show after it emerged that Top Gear faked the results of its Roadster test showing the vehicle being pushed to a garage.

We expect Clarkson to handle the situation with his usual brand of tact and decorum... and also wonder if he really DID get to the North Pole?
