Tesla treats fans to sedan preview

Fans of battery fans and prospective Tesla Model S owners had their first look at the brand's electric sedan as the company prepared to start deliveries in 2012.

Tesla invited customers who had reserved one of its stunning all-new sedans to tour its factory and to take test rides in a Model S prototype. About 6000 people have ordered a Model S, a company spokesman said.

The car is said to have a rigid body, close to 50/50 weight distribution and the responsiveness and agility usually reserved for top sports cars.

THREE BATTERY OPTIONS

Using a state-of-the-art electric powertrain, the motor generates 415Nm and sends it to the rear wheels via a fixed gear reduction. The drive inverter, motor and single-speed gearbox are packaged together for the arrangement’s “unprecedented efficiencies in conductivity and thermal management”.

The Model S is offered with three battery options for ranges of 260km (for the standard battery), 370km and 480km on a full charge.

LEAF AND LEATHER: Materials used in the cabin range from unusual banana leaf to regular leather.

Apart from that, the Model S is described as a driver’s car, but Tesla has committed to reducing its impact on the environment; banana leaf, for example, is used for the cabin fascia.

A 17” touchscreen allows for wi-fi or mobile connectivity while performing media, navigation, communication, cabin control and vehicle data functions.

Speaking to the crowd at Tesla’s Fremont, California plant, company CEO Elon Musk said “we need your help” - perhaps recognising its success will be instrumental in pushing the company back into the black.

Musk also announced Tesla would introduce a faster Model S that will cover the 0-100 sprint in about 4.5sec.

The Model S production run for 2012 is already sold out. The base model will sell for the equivalent of about R450 590, the Roadster for R855 650. Tesla will phase out production of its niche Roadster to focus on its mainstream Model S before its Model X sport utility prototype is unveiled in December, 2011.

The Model X will be launched in late 2013.
