Taxi plunges village into darkness

A minibus taxi caused a power outage in a North West village on Wednesday after crashing into a cow and then an electric pole.

The driver was on his way from Lotlhakane village to Mahikeng when he hit a cow crossing the road, the province's public safety department spokesman Lesiba Moses Kgwele said. He veered off the road and slammed into an electric pole near Setumo High School in Majemantsho village around 6.30pm.

Rescuers had to wait for Eskom technicians before using the jaws of life to free the injured driver from the wreckage, as live wires were lying across the road.

POWER LOSS

The driver, who was alone in the taxi, sustained serious injuries. The cow was less fortunate.

"Police might not be in a position to trace the owner of the cow as some villagers allegedly rushed to the scene with wheelbarrows, pots etc, to help themselves to the carcass before police arrived."

Department MEC Desbo Mohono condemned this "looting of the carcass" in the strongest terms.

"The branded cow hide was vital evidence that might have assisted the police to trace the owner of the cow in order to charge him for animal neglect that caused the accident that nearly cost the taxi driver his life."

Kgwele estimated that about 3000 households were affected by the power outage and said technicians were working to restore the supply.
