Super Series stays at the coast

Round 3 of the WesBank Super Series will howl into action at the Aldo Scribante circuit in Port Elizabeth on Saturday with up-close action and an electric atmosphere.

Scribante is also home to VW and Audi and provides an incentive for local drivers and factory-backed and private teams from the respective camps. The meeting also adds emphasis to the VW Cup and Formula VW events in the full programme of saloon, single-seater and motorcycle action.

With the season now in full swing title contenders have emerged pretty much as expected. For those behind it is not yet time to hit the panic button but they need to use Scribante to give their title challenges some momentum.

V8 Supercars

An Auby leading the Supercar championship is no big surprise. Fact is that Jimmy Auby (Ford Falcon) who tops the boards in the Super GT class with younger brother and champion Brandon down in fifth in a similar car raises a few eyebrows.

However only 10 points separate the brothers and sandwiched between them are Welkom brothers Danie and Jaco Correia (Corvettes) and father Deon Auby (Lumina).

Each is e potential winner, particularly when the reverse grid comes into operation for race two.

Much the same situation exists in the GT Class where only five points separate former champion Roelf du Plessis (Mustang) and champion Des Gutzeit (another Mustang).

Production Cars

Only four points separate three drivers at the top of the Class A championship so the four-race format seems to be working.

There have been six different winners in the eight races run so far but only reigning champion Anthony Taylor (BMW 335i) and Hennie Groenewald (Subaru WRX) have won more than once.

Taylor and team mate Melvill Priest lead the championship from Groenewald with former champion Johan Fourie (Audi S5) leading a second wave of title challengers that includes Michael Stephen and Tschops Sipuka (Audis) and Marco da Cunha (Nissan). Of the second wave only Fourie has not won this season but he has a new Audi S4 this time out...

Stephen won first time out in the Audi S4 in Cape Town before teething problems spoiled things and Sipuka will be similarly equipped for Scribante.

Groenewald will also be a handful with back-up from Richard Pinard and Tannith Gardner, the latter still needing to shake off a little ring rust. Da Cunha and brother Paolo (Nissan 350Z) also come into the equation when races are run from a reversed grid.

The BMW team, as last season, is fast and reliable but being ganged-up on by the Audis and Subarus.

Class T is turning into a struggle between Graeme Nathan and Gary Formato and youngsters Gennaro Bonafede and Kieren Quarmby. Reigning champion Nathan (Golf GTi) and former champion Formato (Ford Focus) are leading Bonafede (Golf GTi) and Quarmby (Golf GTi) in the championship with Nathan holding a six point advantage over Formato.

VW Polo Cup

The VW Cup leader board is a little unusual in that after two events there’s a 19-point gap between first and second – way larger than normal in a one-marque race.

Alberton teenager Devon Robertson goes to Port Elizabeth with a handy early season advantage over Cape driver Kosie Weyers and Kelvin van der Linde, who is only 14, completes the top three.

Van der Linde is only a point ahead of Kyle Barnes and, further back, only two points separate Robyn Kruger, Shaun la Reservee and Bryan Morgan. Two interesting races coming...

On the Masters front only four points separate Graeme, Lee Thompson and Brett Roach. After two wins at Kyalami in the opening round, Thompson struggled in Cape Town and will be looking to hit back in a field that includes veteran local driver Curt Alchin.

SA Superbike/SA Supersport

The SA Superbike championship has turned into a tale of two riders – Greg Gildenhuys (BMW) and former double champion Sheridan Morais (Kawasaki).

Morais did the double at Kyalami with Gildenhuys second but their roles reversed at Killarney. All of which has left the two riders locked on points at the top of the championship.

Round three of their battle is keenly anticipated. In trying to separate the two riders perhaps the one factor in favour of Morais is being able to sharpen his skills in the FIM Superstock championship where he was a more than creditable 11th in the opening round at Assen.

Behind Gildenhuys and Morais, Chris Leeson (Kawasaki) is leading Nicolas Grobler (BMW), Julian Odendaal (Kawasaki) and Jonathan Willcox (BMW).

On the Supersport front, Cape Town youngster Dave McFadden (Kawasaki) will be looking to make it six out of six. The opposition, led by the Honda team, will be hoping the law of averages catches up...

Clint Seller, youngster Brent Harran and veteran Lance Isaacs lead the challenge while Robert Portman (Triumph) will be looking to hit top form. Missing for the second race in a row will be Alberton teenager Steven Odendaal – he’ll be having a second Moto2 outing at the Portuguese MotoGP.
