Speedster nabbed at 217 km/h

2007-12-31 12:48

Durban - The highest speed in KwaZulu-Natal for the festive season was recorded on Sunday night after a motorist was caught travelling at 217km/h, the province's transport department said on Monday.

Spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the man had been travelling on the N3 towards Durban when he was caught.

"This was the highest speed reported in the province thus far," she said.

The man was arrested on the spot and will appear at the Pinetown Magistrate's Court late on Monday.

If only the authorities paid attention to our crappy roads as they are doing for speed. Next time I hit that terrible pothole between Ottosdal and De La Reyville in North West, I'll file a case for attempted murder against the National Roads Agency and other accessories.

Driving conditions on our roads are becoming increasingly hazourdous to say the least. Lack of driver skills, bad road conditions, lack of consideration for others and alcohol are all factors contributing to accidents. But regardless of what you drive speedsters need to adjust their speed to consider other road users. Doing 200km/h out on the open road might be "safe" in a German car but not on the M1 where you have other road users to consider....We need metro cops that can count past 10!

I do not agree with the comments that anyone doing over 160km/h is now suddenly a "murderer" that should be locked up. Most of today's cars, especialy from Germany, are MADE to handle well over 200km/h quite safely. The "projectile" which I like to refer to as a "CAR" is very controllable at such speeds with proper respect and knowledge of the vehicle. It's the DRIVER that makes the difference. You can kill someone whilst travelling at 40km/h. So please...speed is NOT the issue here.

A Hi-ace Taxi with 16 passengers at 120 km is more dangerous than a new Volvo, Mercedes, Audi etc at 220. Please see things within context. It is the bad roads, drivers, unroadworthy vehicles and traffic police who has no idea what road safety means that kills.

I seriously agreed with the initial government proposal that the vehicle of a speedster should be confiscated. Our family suffered from a speedster who 1-year prior to our affected incident was caught speeding; the vehicle was not confiscated. In May 2007 the same vehicle killed our family member when it was speeding and went through an intersection. If they want to speed; go to a racetrack - our public roads are not racetracks!

What fine is the court going to impose on the driver? A few thousand rand? This driver can be categorized in the same mould as drunken drivers - "potential murderers" and should be charged accordingly. How many of these drivers are caught and brought to book - a pitifull few. They are on the roads steering an uncontrollable projectile at speeds which will obliterate any vehicle or person it hits (recent case of family being wiped out in George/Wildernes area)Charge should be - "attempted murder"
