Johannesburg - Controversial 5FM radio personality Gareth Cliff has taken to social media site Twitter to clarify reports that he was arrested for speeding in Pretoria on Tuesday night.
He was, for doing more than 180km/h in a 120 zone, but said on Twitter: "Rumours of my imprisonment are greatly exaggerated."
Cliff phoned in to a morning radio talk show at about 6.15am today to explain he had been on his way home from Johannesburg airport after flying in from Durban and was very tired. "You know how it is," he said, "you're tired and you just want to get home and you don't watch your speedometer closely enough.
'SO MUCH PAPERWORK'
"The next thing I knew were blue lights behind me and I was taken off to the police station but I only spent a few minutes in a real police cell - and no, I didn't meet Big Bubba!"
He said the police were very efficient but he couldn't believe there was so much paperwork involved in an arrest for speeding.
Gauteng traffic police spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo said Cliff was arrested after being caught at 182km/h on the R21 in Lyttelton. He was ordered to ppear in court in Pretoria on Wednesday to face charges of speeding and reckless or negligent driving.
SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago was unaware of Cliff's arrest last night and refused to comment until he had all the relevant information.
The news of the "shock jock's" arrest began trending on Twitter, under the hashtag FreeGarethCliff. Some users expressed their sympathy for the man but one said: "Just because he's the best radio host in the country doesn't mean we just overlook his wrongdoings."
