Severe Dakar test for VW's bakkie

2009-11-18 07:05

The final endurance testing hurdle for VW’s Amarok bakkie will be in a logistical support role during next year’s Dakar rally.

Set to run in South America for the second consecutive year, VW has announced it will supply 35 Amaroks to service various requirements during the Dakar event.

Of the 35 vehicles, 15 will serve as shuttles between the stages.

The remaining 20 will enrol as dedicated support vehicles for the VW racing team, which, in case you’ve been on Marion Island for the last year without an internet connection, is the team our boy, Giniel, races for.

The close proximity of Amarok’s production facility in Pancheco, Argentina, will ensure any production or design relevant data collected during the punishing three week event can seamlessly be translated back to the Amarok’s research and development regime.

If Giniel wins again - and we certainly hope for nothing less - there might even be a De Villiers Amarok or Toureag limited edition in the offering…

H has a point, you ever watch the REAL Dakar and I don't mean the Supersport Version. ALL the bikes and cars have complete engines waiting for them...every overnight rest they have a CREW of mechanics stripping the WHOLE car down, REPLACING parts...so really, this is not really a test. The TRUE test will come when they start to sell to the public...all cars break but VW dealers have a knack of being....pathetic...so we wait for the new bakkie...it might be good but the dealers will for SURE cock it up.

You can't get a much better marketing platform for a new vehicle than the DAKAR. Brilliant PR

The title of this article implies that vw will enter this bakkie in the race. A support vehicle is a far cry from a COMPETITOR.

Sorry to bust your bubble dudes but I do not drive an X3....I drive a petrol VW cos I do not trust the Turbo on them Diesel VWs....Yes I am a fan of VW thus I drive one but BLIND I am not.....Yes people do die on the Dakar and thumbs up to the competitors (pity the pedestrains who are run over cos some stranger comes charging thru his back yard) but this here VW is playing a "support"role, not a competive role, thus they can fly in spares to replace the blown turbos.......Maybe I am an A$$hole in your book for not being a blind follower......

H, you are pathetic... You probably drive a BMW 3 series and think you are unique... Have you actually took time out to watch the Dakar.. People die in this form of the sport... They will not be testing how quickly is takes to fix things and fly in part, they will be testing the off road ability of the vehicle in the worst environment in real time...

What Test????.....they will have all the spares they need for repairs and fly in more spares when those get finished.......Severe dakar test I think not!!!! Th only test is when Joe Average spends his hard earned Buck and drives the vehicle.....lets hope the TDi Turbos do not blow!

I can tell you now i saw this bakkie in central Pretoria twice in the last two weeks heavily disguised together with the new Polo hatch with the VW badge removed. If you've seen the pictures on the internet it was easy to spot it. The other give away was that it was 'escorted' by about 4 VW micro buses with EC temporary registration plates. If you drive regularly in PTA you must have seen the cars i'm talking about, sometimes they use Audi A4's also with EC temporary registrations
