Senna's V12 F1 kit car for sale

With the release in 2010 of the epic (award winning) documentary chronicling his life, there’s been huge renewed interest in all things Ayrton Senna.

Arguably the most passionate and brilliant F1 driver of modern (all?) times, original Senna memorabilia is always going to interest wealthy collectors.

The latest piece to go on auction will be of special interest to those with a model kit fetish.

"THAT'S JUST THE F1 CAR ON MY WALL"

Set to go under the hammer on Saturday 13 August, automotive specialist auction house Coys will offer discerning Senna collectors the opportunity to own the great Brazilian’s 1991 championship winning McLaren MP4/6.

After Senna won his third (and final) driver’s world championship in 1991, McLaren dismantled his Honda V12 powered MP4/6 and gave the constituent parts to artist Jay Burridge.

Instead of doing something weird - like making peculiar furniture or cookware with the various bits of McLaren composite - Burridge did something rather original. He assembled the MP4/6 bits into a neatly arranged art installation model kit, just like the ones you glued your fingers together trying to build as a kid.

Senna Airfix kit MP4/6 will, quite fittingly, be auctioned at the hallowed German Nürburgring racing circuit, with Coys expecting it to fetch between R300 000 – R500 000; not a lot considering the value of the parts interlinked.
