Scooby STI goes auto

Your Scooby WRX STI agitating you maddeningly in morning traffic? Why not swop it for a five-speed auto?

Called the A-Line (what a euphemism for automatic), this new model, announced in Japan yesterday, fuses all the inherent dynamic madness of the 221kW WRX STI with a more relaxed urban driving experience.

Retaining the fabled 2.5l boxer flat-four, boost modulated by a dual active valve control system and tumble generation valve for optimal air-intake, performance is hardly diluted. The five-speed automatic transmission can left to its own devices in D, or manipulated by paddle-shift controls on the steering column, behind the wheel.

Enthusiasts will be heartened by the presence of throttle blipping control. When downshifting during dynamic driving the transmission control unit interacts with the engine management system to commensurately increase engine speed, ensuring optimal throttle balance on corner entry.

Could the WRX STI A-Line constitute the most radical brake disc upgrade is automotive history?

A curious feature mentioned in the specification sheet concerns the new brakes.

According to media release the WRX STI A-Line relies on a set of brake discs measuring 432mm up front and 406mm at the rear axle, which would be a monumental upgrade of the manual shift WRX STI – which sports 330mm discs up front and 320mm at the rear. We can only assume something got lost in translation…

Distinguishing features for the A-Line includes a new Satin White Pearl body colour, whilst the interior benefits from revised, eight-way adjustable, powered and heated front seats.
